With the Country in the middle of a Great Depression, Franklin Delano Roosevelt promoted the New Deal. Liberals and Revisionist hailed the New Deal because government was stepping in to improve the lives of Americans. However, Conservatives saw this as the beginning of government welfare programs that turned out to be failures by the end of the 20th century. The “Aid to families with dependent children Act in 1935” caused a break down in the family structure. The father was no longer the provider for the family and became expendable. This led to increase in the number of single parent households. The New Deal also began with a social security program designed to encourage people to retire earlier so that younger Americans could find jobs. Conservatives believe that this was a failed policy because it did not take into account that eventually there would be too many retires for working people to support. Bill Clinton mishandled what started out with President Bush as good intentions to get food to starving people to the point of failure. Liberals and Revisionist will see this as a success because Bill Clinton got American soldiers out of a bad situation in Somalia. Conservatives will see this as a failure of the Clinton administration because in the end there were still starving people who did not receive food. In Somalia the people who had food did not want us there or want us to get food to the people who were starving. The Conservative view would have been to get the food to the starving people even if there were people who didn’t want us there.
