I am the slave of a white master who treats me kind, here is where I learnt to read and improve my handwriting, I have been allowed the privilege to an education, something slaves were not taught because of the liberty that came with it. I have read many books of different languages, however the writing of a French philosopher has grasped my interest and his writings is about equality and rights for people, this has enticed me to let the slave population know that there is hope for us, for them.
I was able to gain the trust of my master and so became free, in turn I decided that I would still work for him but not for free. I was paid. Working as a free slave on the plantation I was able to become familiar with a lot of the other slaves, this is where I learnt that some slaves were resented by their masters to the point where they were burnt with wax or boiling cane sugar was poured on them, some were roasted alive and even made to eat their own feces and drink urine. A lot has happened to cause this, me watching my people suffer and mistreated. Around this time there was a plot where some masters were poisoned. On August 16 1791 some male slaves decided they were fed and took to setting fire to some of the estates, they eventually told the masters about the plan to rebel. Alas we had formed a wedge where we can break and make some changes. After months of planning and helping my master escape to safety, on August 22nd we took (them) the other masters by surprise.
