What Is The Lincoln Memorial
The Lincoln Memorial is a building located in Washington, D.C., dedicated to our 16th president. The memorial opened to the public in May 30, 1922. A Greek temple was the design for the memorial, made of marble, with a large statue of Lincoln. At the feet of the statue, there are two plaques, both speeches made by Lincoln, both well-know. The building was designed in 1867, with a pre-made statue, designed by Lot Flannery. The nation demanded a more suitable setting for the 16th president.
The government trouble deciding where to place the memorial. The section west of the Potomac river was open, but that section was to swampy and inaccessible. Other placement recommendation included Union Station. However, the commission decided to keep their
location. They thought that the Potomac park was ideal.
In 1904, Congress gave &300,000 to help build the memorial. The memorial was, as stated before, finished in 1922. Some important national people figures were President Harding, commission director Howard Taft, and Robert Todd Lincoln, who, at the time, was 78 years old.
