“I concluded to myself that if I were the hunter, I would shoot the monkey so that it would no longer have the chance to put other hunters in the same predicament” (218). The fact that this was the last page of the novel, I believe that it was written to show that because of the extent of how horrific the author’s experience was, he wouldn’t want anyone else to deal with the same situation. It portrays how Beah developed and grown as a person through these tragic experiences, and how he came to rehabilitation and acceptance of what he had gone…

The Monkey's Paw by W.W. Jacobs is a story of misfortune. The author uses foreshadowing in the story to build tension, and suspense to keep the reader entertained. W.W. Jacob does this by creating certain plot twists, and pacing the story rapidly but still having lots of detail. This book reminds me of being careful for what I wish for and lessons learned. The story begins with the main character, Mr. White, receiving a monkey's paw from a friend.…

The second most suspenseful story I believe is The Monkey’s Paw. I believe this suspense story deserves the second place title because this story, much like The Tell-Tale Heart, paired fear and horror with the suspense. In The Monkey’s Paw, the author uses the fear of being buried alive, which I think is another interesting way to create dread in your reader, this helps the suspense flow a little smoother, because now your reader is worried and just has to know what happens to the character. I love that this suspense story used classic suspense, the suspense was how you would expect suspense to be; the beginning was a dark and stormy night and the characters were living their normal lives until someone showed up knocking at the door. One of…

In W.W Jacob’s short story “The Monkey’s Paw,” there are many instances of foreshadowing in order to keep readers engaged and on the edge of their seats. In part one of “The Monkey’s Paw” the White family is introduced to the monkey’s paw by, family friend, Sergeant Major Morris. Major Morris explains the indelible outcome of using the paw. Mrs. White asks if anyone has used the paw before and Major Morris responds with “‘The first man used his wishes, yes,’”...”’I don't know what his first two wishes were, but the third was for death. That's how I got the paw.’” (Jacobs 34-35) This shows that if the family decides to use the paw, then then there may be dreadful consequences.…

so it didn't hurt others. Sergeant told the whites about the paw and that is the reason everything tragic happened to them. As Jacobs states in the monkey's paw“ “Well, it's just a bit of what you call magic, perhaps,” said the sergeant- major off-handler. ”(1) This quote is proving that the Major is the cause…

A suspenseful and horrific piece of literature, “The Monkey Paw” is written by W.W Jacobs. A quaint family of three receives an unusual monkey paw that is capable of making any three wishes come true. Despite the caveat of a curse attached to the paw, the family chooses to make a wish, evoking from the story a suspenseful attitude as the reader becomes wrapped up in finding out the Smiths’ fated ends. With the combination of W.W Jacobs’ settings, characters, and foreshadowing, the theme of the story, “that fate cannot be decided upon by man” is delivered pointedly and with style.…

In W.W. The old fakir had already used two out of the three wishes and wished for his third wish to be death. So the old fakir died and that’s how Sergeant Morris got the paw. Throughout the short stories “The Chaser” by John Collier and “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs, there are similarities, like the interference of fate and the concept of consequences that stands out when comparing the two. In “The Chaser,” Alan Austen comes to the Old Man with hope that he can buy a potion to give his love, Diana. Alan intends to give Diana a love potion causing her to show love and affection towards Alan, which she did not before. Alan is overwhelmed with joy that Diana will share mutual feelings with him that he forgets that he is rearranging fate. “’That is love!’ cried Alan” (TC). Alan doesn’t know what love really is. Love is an emotion that cannot be forced and by giving Diana the love potion, Alan isn’t creating love but a fairytale. In “The Monkey’s Paw,” Mr. White also interferes with fate when he begins to make his wishes on the paw. For his first wish, Mr. White asks for two hundred pounds. This may appear to be a small action although it is still interference. What Alan and Mr. White both don’t understand is that everything has a cause and effect although they were too blindsided about what they wanted.…

To begin with, uncertain circumstances are unclear of their results before they happen. In the story, sergeant-major Morris mentions, “But I warn you of consequences,” which means that something bad might happen. Also, including the old man and the old lady, lots of other people all oppose of man taking the Monkey’s paw because it may cause harm to the man. Besides, others who were interested in it wished to use it and then pay afterwards if it worked. From these, we can know that uncertain circumstances are not only unclear, but may also result in devastating consequences.…
