the poem out of the one presented in lesson 13. Already just the way that the poem is structured grabs
my attention. One can almost feel the beat of the drums when reading the poem. The rhythm of the
drums represents each word, and sometimes the beat is fast sometimes slow. I also like the fact that the
title is repeated at the beginning of each new passage. The second poem “This World is not
Conclusion” written by Emily Dickinson is also very interesting the words are a lot more abstract then
the first poem. The poem itself is very short, however every word that Emily Dickinson uses helps
progress the poem just a bit farther. Also the topic
of the poem itself is quiet interesting to me. Already
just the title creates so many questions.
The topic and themes found in “Beat! Beat! Drums!” is quiet abstract there is a metaphorical
drum beat that is found all over the world. I believe that poets preceding Walt Whitman would not have
been able to capture the beat of the drums in the rhythm of the words. Also perhaps instead of using a
more free verse style of writing other poets would consciously try to make sure that the sentences
rhymed. The poem written by Emily Dickinson is also very abstract in meaning, she talks about the
world how different groups of people on the world view it as a conclusion. I believe that poets before
Emily Dickinson would have made sure that there was more of a traditional structure to the poem.
Also instead of writing two or three small words per line the other poets would have written in
somewhat complete sentences.
