Ralph could possibly represent the good in man. The man that has a moral code and with it he respects others. In having rules and being a leader he benefited the whole group. He tries to keep the peace and fights for it. I see the main theme of the story being that one cannot live without a moral code. While its easier and more convenient for those who want to laze around all day. Its hard on everyone, you can see this in the story when the boys let the fire go out and a ship went by. As Piggy says in the book; “Which is better-to have rules and agree or to hunt and kill?” …show more content…
Piggy’s presupposition is that there is a right and wrong.
He assumes that there is an absolute, a moral code on the island. He thinks that because he believes in a right and wrong then everyone else does too. Because of this belief, he thinks that Jack will give the specs back. Piggy in this part of the story shows faith in his friends, he believes that they will do what is right. The significance of morality in this scene is that these boys don’t have morals anymore. Piggy still does and when he questions Jack’s group they retaliate because they don’t want to be questioned. Those without morality don’t want to be questioned with
it.
Jacks response in this scene is essentially that to him and his group its better to hunt and kill than to have rules. He retaliates in anger and starts a fight with Ralph and the others. When Jack is called a thief he is angered and responds through violence. He gets really angry and pretty much explodes. In this scene he pretty much gets his whole group to join with him against Ralph. He goes after Ralph and in the process the twins Samneric get tied up and Simon and Piggy are both killed.
Jack is infuriated by that charge because I think this is when he knows he is wrong. The main reason that Jack responds in anger; is because a little part of him knows what he is doing is wrong. He probably feels guilty but he is in so far and he has a following so he feels if he gives up everyone will leave him. He probably doesn’t want to be known as a thief but because of what he did he is now marked as one. It could also be that when he is called a thief he is reintroduced to the fact that there is a moral standard. If there is a moral standard than what he did is wrong and he probably doesn’t like that.
