This case involved a public high school student, Matthew Fraser who gave a speech nominating another student for a student elective office. The speech was given at an assembly during school as a part of a school-sponsored educational program in self-government. While giving the speech, Fraser referred to his candidate in what the school board called "elaborate, graphic, and explicit metaphor." After his speech, the assistant principal told Fraser that the school considered the speech a violation of the school 's "disruptive-conduct rule." This prohibited conduct that interfered with the educational process, including obscene, profane language or gestures. After Fraser admitted he intentionally had used sexual innuendo in the speech, he was told that he would be suspended from school for three days, and his name would be removed from the list of the speakers at the graduation exercises.…
I did my norms violation at DD’S Discount. My mom and I wearied a paper bag and we designed it as a monkey and giraffe. We shopped and we walked around for an hour. Then, we bought ninety-three dollars and ninety-eight cents of stuff. We paid with pure coins. There was only one lady in the cashier the other two lady’s took their break, so the lady was the only one there. It was us, then there was three people behind us. The cashier got frustrated because we paid in coins and then she had more people to attend. The people behind us got frustrated as well. Then, some lady was impatient and offered if she can just pay it for us, and so did my brother. We told her no and she just left her cart there and she just left. The cashier and the security…
Not only did that unnecessary break happen but, “In another case, a principal and two teachers in Kansas City, Missouri, were suspended with pay after twenty-three elementary school students were strip-searched in an effort to locate five dollars in missing lunch money. A female teacher allegedly took the girls into a restroom and had them strip down to their underwear when no one admitted taking the money. A male physical education teacher executed the same procedure with male students. The money was later found in the boy's restroom but was not located as part of either search.”(Essex) This piece of evidence shows another break from the learning environment to find a couple dollars, this shows the distrust in teachers to students from the teachers searching students, but ultimately finding the money in a different place. In addition, in the case of Bellnier v. Lund, the Plaintiff Leonti said he had 4 dollars when…
In my experiment of breaking the norm, I did two different things. in one of my “experiments” I would hold doors anywhere I where for the people that were behind me and wait for a response, when the person was educated enough to say thank you I would smile and let it go. When the opposite happened, whenever the person behind me did not say thank you I would compliment myself. I would thank myself for holding the door instead.…
In today’s society, social norm violations are what hold American culture, while separating us as distinct individuals. We have unwritten rules of how we are expected to behave in a certain way whether it’s in a public or private gatherings. They can change throughout time “Norms are transmitted through a process of socialization, by which every member of society is subtly trained to appreciate and follow these norms.”(Williams,2011) because of these unwritten rules we have a different minds set as time passes, if we travel a few decades back in time, the way we dress or behave can all be violations. By observing and committing a norm I have realized that the power of society pressures us to behave in a certain matter for…
Mathew Fraser a 17 year old senior gave an inappropriate sexual speech during an assembly where his classmates and school staff attended. His speech was related to his classmate’s vice- presidential election for student government. He was suspended from school for three days because he broke the school disciplinary code for inappropriate sexual comments as well as gestures. The student father was angry and said the school was breaking the First Amendment for the freedom of speech.…

Breaking a norm is like an experiment. You are never going to know what the outcome is going to be. A lot of sociologist like to see it as a social experiment, and the reason is because people are living their life what is considered the right way. It’s a mimicry, everyone doing the same thing, following the same rules, avoiding everything that is not considered normal, usual, typical, and even standard. For my social experiment, I decided that my norm violation would be saying “I love you” when ending a conversation. The objective of my experiment was to break a norm that would help me study how people would react to something that is not usually said is being said to them. I knew it would not only make people uncomfortable, but I think this…
Imagine a world where anything could be considered offensive. Now imagine that world full of college students who are apart of a generation coddled to a point of disgust. In this world, the slightest challenge of a college student's ideas is considered offensive and disgraceful. This is the world that is being built right before my eyes. The Los Angeles Times Editorial Board wrote an essay titled “Warning: College Students, This Editorial May Upset You” wherein the topic of “triggers” is heavily spoken of. Triggers are essentially any subject topic in a class that could be found offensive to certain people. The editorial discusses how college professors are now being told they must warn students so as to not trigger them. The students can leave class if there is a possible trigger in the lecture and no points will be deducted. This is a disgrace to our bedrock of education. The real world, one without professors and people helping you through every step of the way, is mean, dirty, offensive, and unfair. College students are not learning what it is like to live in the real-world.…
For my folkway violation I chose to position myself six inches away from someone during a conversation. I chose to try this particular one because I knew my mom would give me the best, honest reaction. She has always had a small pet peve that was people getting in her personal space. I thought to myself this is the perfect norm violation for me to use. I was able to easily approach my mom at home where she would be completely clueless of the stunt.…
For my norm experiment, I chewed with my mouth opened as I sat for dinner with my friends. We went to got eat at a Steakhouse, which I forgot the name of, for my friend’s twentieth birthday. I was a little hesitant at first to perform the task because personally if someone else around me did it, I would be a little disgusted. I however, decided to do it because I couldn’t think of another ‘norm’ experiment to perform. Once I ordered the food and the server came to hand it to us, I thought of a way to perform the experiment to compare the reactions of performing the ‘norm’ normally. I took a first bite and chewed with my mouth closed in the beginning. No one seemed to find it weird, everything was normal and everyone seemed fine. After what…
Universities are considering adopting speech codes that would put a ban on offensive, demeaning, and provoking speech. The developments of these speech codes are not necessary. Sheltering students from speech that might offend them is patronizing to say the least. Do college officials really believe the students are too weak to live with the Bill of Rights? The fact of the matter is that speech codes on college campuses are threatening students’ freedom of speech and the free exchange of ideas and therefore have no place in higher education.…
I recently performed an experiment on a norm violation which had to do with elevators, and proper behavior while inside of them. The over all plan of this experiment was to stand facing the corner of the elevator so that no one could see my face as I went up or down. People today usually stand facing the door while riding in an elevator, so it was interesting to see peoples reactions as I violated this everyday norm. My hypothesis was that I would not get very many reactions – unless it was a close friend of mine who was entering the elevator. It turned out that I was completely wrong because I got various reactions.…

The rule about keeping money safe has been slightly altered. The rule dictates that students are strongly discouraged from keeping large sums of money in the dorm because it can get stolen, and should keep it in a Groton S.A.F.E. account instead. If stolen, whoever is able to identify the criminal is given a reward. However, any person who refuses to disclose the secrets of the culprit is given the same punishment as the thief. This way, all criminal activity will be quickly discovered. Once the stolen money is found it is given directly to the school. This is because the owner of the money should not have kept it in the dorm in the first place and therefore doesn’t deserve the money. The money is also handed over to the school to help promote the school’s welfare, which is every student’s duty to contribute to. Third Form dorms are expected to be quiet from 10:00-10:30. Although this rule is in the handbook already, the school currently does not enforce it. From now on, this rule will be strictly followed. The administrators should not trust the students to be quiet on their own. The school has also amended the rule about pets. The rule is that students are not allowed to have pets on campus. If a pet is found, the pet will be put to death and the student will also receive multiple restrictions. Although it is a light offense, light ones should be punished as harshly as heavy offenses…
