Dante, one of the characters in the painting, is shown as he is deeply in love with Beatrice. Beatrice holds a rose or a flower close to her heart, which can indicate that she is secretly in love with Dante and is protecting her fragile heart. Dante holds his hand close to his own heart, which is almost the same figure and action like Beatrice. This can mean that Dante and Beatrice both have each other’s heart, or the opposite. Beatrice stares straight ahead, as if she does not know Dante as well. The story behind the painting is strange. When Beatrice was 8 and Dante was 7, Dante was immediately taken with her. He still loved her even when she got married to another man. According to an autobiography, La Vita Nuova by Dante himself, Dante and Beatrice had only met twice in their entire lives, but Dante’s love for her never faltered. His love for Beatrice went on for at least 9 years, this was the time when Dante and Beatrice met again. They met on a street in Florence, where Beatrice was wearing white, accompanied by 2 older women. She turned and greeted him, which filled him with an abundance of joy. He retreated back to his room, where he thought about her. Thus, creating the painting Dante and Beatrice.
