Machina is a movie about a worker named Cayleb, who was lucky enough to spend one week with his employer, Nathan, at his employer's house. During the week Cayleb spends with Nathan, he is to do a test with the "first" AI robot named Ava that was created by Nathan. If the test is passed, Nathan will then release the information that he has created an AI robot to public. However, through the course of one week Cayleb starts to discover secrets that Nathan is hiding from him and as Cayleb unfolds these secrets, Ava starts to tell Cayleb not to trust Nathan. Also, who is the mysterious girl named, Kiyoko that is always by Nathan's side, but doesn't understand what Cayleb or Nathan says. What would Cayleb do as he is trapped to decide whether to continue to trust his suspicious employer or trust an AI that was created by his employer who seems to be telling the truth? This movie being a sci-fi film, has its great way with using computers to make everything so real such as the AI robotic body that Ava is. As well as, using some technology that exists in our world today. This movie was more directed towards teens/adults, age 17 or older, due to its explicit language used in the movie, nudity, and partial violence. However, looking past that and going into the purpose of what this movie represented, this movie was filmed to show others of how each and every human, those that are starting to interact with not just their friends and family, but also society, think in today's world. But this movie portrays it in a unique way to try and capture the audience's attention, by putting human emotions through an AI robot, which in turns portrays technological advancements in today's world as well. Through this film, we can all grasp the idea of how smart and cunning humans can be, but at the same time, being very intellectual does not acquire one whatever they desire, as there are others that can be more clever than the other.
Thus, creating AIs could be of great help, but if AIs have a brain that is similar to humans, AIs can one day replace humans as they are brighter than those who created them. The script for this film seemed to make it more of a suspense film as well. Cayleb, portrayed by Domhnall Gleeson, speaks in a casual, intelligent, and awkward tone, but very nervous tone through some parts of the movie when Nathan and Ava asks him some questions to where he does not know how to answer. Nathan, portrayed by Oscar Isaac, is given lines to speak in a very careless and casual way, but at the same time keeping his authority as an employer of Cayleb, which in terms keeps audiences wondering what is going through that man's mind. Ava, portrayed by Alicia Vikander, needed to speak in a intelligent way as well as speaking with a robotic tone to make her sound just like how an AI would sound like. As for Kiyoko, portrayed by Sonoya Mizuno, had no lines, but needed to show no facial expressions throughout acting in order to relevantly keep Nathan more suspicious. Watching actors and actresses who I am unfamiliar with, I felt that they did an excellent job of portraying the characters of the film. Though the acting was great, the pace for the storyline development …show more content…
seemed a bit too quick as I felt that there could've been more content throughout the film, such as adding more of topics throughout the test on like what to talk with the AI then having the AI change the subject, besides just talking casually. I felt that the producers didn't want to put in more information due to the fact that it would only be a one week event in the movie, but adding more could've increased the excitement, but skipping through the test sessions was not done too well. Throughout the movie, the characters were in a house, out in the middle of a forest, with a high security system. This was a clever setting since it was a house that was not located in a place where technology seemed to be alive. Many technology equipment for creating the AI that Nathan created was done through this house and it was just surprising, who would've thought such a secretive AI was developed here. The music and sounds used, made the movie more suspenseful, thrilling, comedic and happy at times. The clothing wasn't too stylish which made the characters look normal instead of trying to capture the audience's attention through flashy clothing. The lighting in the film was a bit dark at times, but overall it fitted the scenes. Some of the props used was alcohol, security cards, CCTV, and computers, which I thought all was needed, such as the alcohol needing to portray Nathan's character trait of being laid back. The movie overall was great, but lacked some material that could've made it more interesting.
As I sat down in the theaters the seating was quite spacious and comfortable since there wasn't many people watching the movie. Halfway, through the movie the air conditioner in the theater started going on and off every 10 minutes, which made the movie experience a bit disappointing, since I couldn't hear some parts of the film. Also, because there was a man who was sleeping and breathing heavily, it made it harder to hear some parts of the film. I would recommend this movie to anyone that is 17 and above, so they know that there are people out there who take advantage of you, but at the same time explore deep into what technology has advanced
to. Stated previously, I enjoyed this movie, but with the theater having the AC open and one man snoring a bit, I couldn't hear at times, so that made the experience of the film not as great. Still, I thought that the movie could've done a bit better by adding more material. However, even with the lack of some content, the movie did a great job of portraying human thoughts and emotions through an AI robot, instead of just having another human express it, which would extremely boring if the producers did that. Part II: The Comparison My partner, Noel Antonio, believed that Nathan's character was a crazy, intelligent, and an alcoholic person. I agree with him being intelligent and an alcoholic, but I disagree with Nathan being a crazy person. Instead, I would describe Nathan to be more secretive and clever, since he was always laid back and didn't show much of an emotion besides being an alcoholic. However, Nathan does have a short temper in which he can get mad at very little discussions or actions that one does. Overall, I felt Nathan's character was calm for the most part. Noel and I, also, got a different message that the movie tried to convey. Noel got the theme as "Everyone has the right to pave their own path and live their own life without being controlled." While I say that in today's society, others are very manipulative and they try to use each other for their own purpose. Other than that Noel and I agreed on the acting and how the movie was directed and produced. My critique is more accurate than my partners because during the movie I would find that my partner would laugh at the “humor” scenes, but I didn’t see that they were there for humor as some of the “humor” scenes was capable enough to progress the story and characters a bit further.
