Before the real interview, there is usually a paragraph introducing the interviewee and the context of this interview. For example, In the interview of J.K. Rolling from NBC New website, it says, “J.K. Rowling is celebrating the publication of her new book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and this past weekend, here at Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, she met with some of her most rabid fans for a special reading”(Couric). This sentence reveals that this interview is because Rowing just published her new book. The name of the book is Harry Potter and Half Blood Prince, which tell people that they will talk about the new book a lot in the next interview. Then, there are also some discussion follow the introduction paragraph: “For devoted fans, it meant the end of two long years of hankering for the new Harry. And for booksellers, it marked the publishing event of the year.” It helps the reader understand why the publication and interview are important as well as fleshing out the background context. I also write some discussion in my Project, “For the fans of William Goldman, it means the end of two years waiting for new novel. For William Goldman himself, the new book combines elements of fantasy, parody, adventure and romance, which is different with any other novel he has written before.” I point out that The Princess Bride is a book with combined genres, which is different with many other books. The questions are about the author herself, the content of the new book, and the expectation of the author. The questions are short but accurate and clear. For example, Couric asks Rowling that, “You’ve said the opening chapter of this book has been brewing in your mind for 13 years.” Couric uses the Rolling’s words and some accurate words like “13 years” as a question. It shows that Couric has read other interviews or press releases from Rolling and she is well prepared. It makes Rowling feels that Couric is a friend of her, so she is willing to share more. The tone of this interview is casual, since they also have some small talk on topic like children and pregnancy. Here is another example of the interview of William Goldman from CNN website, “Although I know you have no interest in directing, does it ever bother you when your original screenplay is far from what you intended?” The interviewer knows that Goldman has no interest in directing, and he mentions that. Then he asks the question. Goldman will feel that the he is talking to someone he is familiar with, so he can open his mind and share his inner thoughts more. Before the interview, the interviewer should know some basic preference and character of the author, and asking some questions based on these stuffs. It makes the author relax, so he is willing to talk more about himself. In my project, I also ask the question base on the author’s character, “You are one of the most popular
