Catherine’s Nakaz
“Catherine the Great” and a New Code of Laws also known as the Nakaz. The document is the primary source, which is that there are a lot of detailed information, and it is the original source about the topic. I think that the document that Catherine the Great wrote to the commissioners for composing a new code of laws, is remarkable because she sought to strengthen laws. She had Enlightenment concepts of natural law, freedom, and, most especially, liberty. The major focus of the Enlightenment, in the Nakaz Catherine contemplated the relationship between the individual and society, as well as the function of traditional social institutions. As a result, the Nakaz reflects the empress’ view of the role of government in accomplishing liberty for a country, the responsibility of the ruler in maintaining liberty for a country, and the effect the ideology of liberty can be expected to have on the people. Catherine the great was a despot monarch, meaning she was all for enlightenment.
She was married to grand duke peter but she realized how mentally unstable and cruel he was, she had him arrested and was announced ruler. She was against serfdom and slavery, she was against discrimination of religion. She was basically dedicated to making her state a better place for her people... but all that changed after she grew impatient. Directly relating to the role of government in maintaining liberty is the responsibility of the ruler. Catherine believed that it was the individual responsibility of the ruler, specifically her responsibility, to recognize and to preserve the necessity of liberty.
Catherine’s nakaz raise additional questions about Catherine or about Russia during her reign, the two specific questions are, what was her definition of justice? And Attitude
