Dr.Jekyll believed he had two different personalities. When he did not drink the potion, he was Dr.Jekyll, but after he drank it he was Mr.Hyde. Mr.Hyde was the dark side of Dr.Jekyll. Mr.Hyde committed a lot of crimes, and got himself into trouble. If it was not for the other characters, Mr.Hyde would still be alive, and Dr.Jekyll would have spent his entire life alternating between the two split personalities. The characters play a vital role in this novel, because they were the ones advancing the plot.

Sir Carew was a friend of Dr.Jekyll, a member of Parliament, and he was Mr.Utterson’s client. A maid witnessed Mr.Hyde killing Sir Carew, and once she was out of the shock, she called the police. The police called Mr.Utterson, and he confirmed that the body was Sir Carew’s. Mr.Utterson also saw the weapon that Sir Carew was murdered with, and he recognized it. It was a cane that he gifted to Dr.Jekyll a long time ago and then he started to wonder how Mr.Hyde was in possession of it. Mr.Utterson visited Dr.Jekyll and asked him where Mr.Hyde was and Dr.Jekyll said he did not know and he no longer wanted to be associated with Mr.Hyde. So, he gave Mr.Utterson a letter that Mr.Hyde had given to him, and Mr.Utterson took it to Mr.Guest.
Mr.Guest was a dear friend of Mr.Utterson. Mr.Utterson had dinner with Mr.Guest and after asked him if he could analyze the handwriting of the letter. Mr.Guest did exactly that. After he carefully analyzed, he told Mr.Utterson that the handwriting was the same as Dr.Jekyll and the only difference was that the letter handwriting was a little slanted.
