Strong people would be wasted by making them wear handicaps instead of using their strength for good. This is shown by saying “The strong were forced to wear heavy weights”.The smart would be wasted by not allowing them to think instead of using their brains to make new innovations. This is shown when the story says “Everyone could only think in short bursts”.The government would waste billions of dollars trying to handicap the entire population. The entire process would be a big waste of time and money for everyone in America. The main counter theme to this story is that competition is very bad and should be eliminated. This could be supported how the characters seem to hate competition and when competition arises it is removed. This would not explain why the government went to great lengths to handicap everyone. This means that the best theme is that total equality is a goal not worth accomplishing is the best theme.
The goal to make everyone equal is a mistaken goal and not worth accomplishing. The process would be dangerous in both execution and outcome and a waste. The theme of Harrison Bergeron is that total equality is not worth trying to accomplish. The idea of total equality is mistaken to make everyone perfect, but in reality, it would make everyone as weak as could be.
This idea is a horrible idea that hopefully will never be accomplished in the near
