Motivations in Religious Conflict Ask an individual what their religious faith means to them, and you may get a thousand different answers from a thousand different people. While for many around the world their religious faith is viewed as an important part of how they define themselves and build and participate in their communities. There are also often great disagreements about what kind of actions represent a faithful practice of a given religion, even within religious movements themselves. The result is that there are often many different competing claims as to what qualifies as an approved aspect of religious doctrine, which has occasionally led to misunderstanding and conflict between groups of people. These concerns have become particularly important once again in recent years, as the onset of a number of serious political upheavals and civil wars in the Middle East and North Africa has renewed concerns about “inherent conflict” between the religious doctrines of the predominantly Christian peoples of Europe and the predominantly Muslim peoples of the Middle East and North Africa.
