The Enemy Above: A Novel of World War II is a story about a twelve-year-old Jewish peasant named Anton. He lives with his uncles and his grandmother, Bubbe in the Ukrainian village of Borshchiv. The story takes place in 1942 during World War II in a farming village. His mother died when he was young, and his father went off to fight in the war. A year after his father left, German soldiers invade Anton’s village with a plan to eradicate all the Jews from the Ukraine. Pursued by Major Von Duesen, a German soldier, Anton and his family were forced to escape in the dead of night to a nearby cave, with little food, water, or other supplies. There they met a group of Jews who are also fleeing from the Nazis. When German soldiers invade the cave, Bubbe creates a distraction and remains behind so the others can escape from the cave. After Bubbe was captured, Anton devises a plan to help her escape. He distracted the guards and sabotaged the truck, and they flee to safety. Outraged and concerned about what his supervisor might think, Major Von Duesen becomes unhinged and murders some of the Jews in cold blood, including Anton’s beloved Bubbe.
