What Recent News Story Has Affected You the Most?
What recent news story has affected you the most? In what ways has it affected you? Use reasons and examples to support your response

Last year, I lived a different experience that made me open my eyes and see all that I have, and how grateful I have to be. It was a community service in La Otra Banda de Carora, a little town of Venezuela. It is called LAS (Lasallista Apostolic Service). I went with two friends and an adult. There I met many friends from different cities. I attended there for ten days. The first 3 days were in the school, then we spent 5 days in the town, and the last 2 days we went back to the school. When we were in the school a group of adults gave us some preparation and they put us in teams. After we had known what we had to do and had been organized, we went to the town. This experience has affected me in different ways.

First, when I got there I remember that I got impressed when I saw the town. It was like a desert. They live far away from the city. They don’t have TV, videogames or electronic products. But they are happy. While the parents are working, children enjoy playing with a dirty ball, jumping in the dry weak floor, hiding behind the trees and getting together at night to see the sky full of stars.

Second, they don’t have restaurants or big malls with many stores. You must ask, What is their life like? Each house has like a mini farm at the back. They feed their animals and spend time in a little church at night.

Third, people there don’t think about what they have to wear or buy to fit in. They are really simple and pleasant people. They should serve you even though they know that they don’t have many things. But it is all about that, the simplicity.

All in all, I think that it was beautiful to went there. I thought that I would go to teach but I went to learn. They teach me the real meaning of life. And it isn’t about the material. It is about the happiness. It is about be yourself. And I learned we waste a lot of time in

The September 11th attacks on the World Trade center not only affected New York but also affected the entire country in a way that no other event has. The attacks shook the way of life of many people including those in the classrooms around Nebraska. After the attacks George W. Bush said, “Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts.” It was just that the way of life of citizens was threatened across the nation. The 9/11 attacks affected the country in a number of ways professional baseball did not play their games as well as college and professional football did not play that weekend in the wake of the attacks and even some parents showed up to schools to get their kids out of the classroom for that day and the next. September 11th 2001 was the deadliest attack on United States soil and was an event that will forever be remembered in history.…

Ok first of all you are awesome. Kairos is awesome. So it’s perfect that you two have come together! Ok seriously, Kairos was the best experience of my life. I hope you get as much out of it as I did. You’ll form so many new friendships that you never would have without this experience. You’ll understand people in way you never would have thought. You have to put in to Kairos what you want to get out of it. You have to really open up. Tell your story. Let others know any problem you are struggling with. No matter how small it seems to you, no problem is too small if it matters to you. Let others know so that they can help you through it. Listen to others so you can help them. Stay up all night. DO NOT SLEEP. Stay up and talk with all the guys. That is where some of your best friendships come from. Don’t be afraid to say anything and everything. Kairos is an accepting and loving environment. (I have so many thoughts right now and they are all coming out so this doesn’t make sense. Sorry.)…

As a child I have always wanted to help other people. When I was 8 my parents decided to separate. At the time, my mother decided to move my sister and I away from Chicago. My mother packed our luggage and decided to move us to Detroit. That wasnt the only time we moved, we moved four times while I was growing up, all over the country and even to another continent. Eventually we had to leave our mom in Nigeria and my sister and I went to Detroit. When we got to Detroit my aunt didn't hesitate to make us feel comfortable. It was just something about it,I still didn't feel right. I called my mother one day crying to her and explaining how we didn't like being there. After talking to her, I felt that it was time to go back to Chicago. I called my dad, (knowing I haven’t spoke/seen him for many years) and explained to him the situation on how we felt uncomfortable in Detroit.…

I woke up feeling physically, mentally exhausted from the day before, packaging meat and cleaning crates for Second Harvest Food Pantry. We sorted and pack meat. The service that I did with the poor was at St. Vincent De Paul. I took the bus with a friend after school on a random Thursday with Ms. Reuter driving the bus, which I didn’t expect her to know how to do at all. It was my first time working there, because I had only worked at the distribution center the year before for confirmation. When we arrived we all signed in and they put the people who had been there before in their normal locations. My friend and I got split up, with me in charge of sorting all of the donated canned foods and my friend went over to move pallets around. While I was working with one of the staff there, I made friends with some freshmen that were also working with me. They started calling me silly names like “broth boy” because at some point I got in charge of sorting canned broths.…

This organization helps cancer patients find needed bone marrow donors. Finding donors are very difficult and finding matches are even more unlikely. This event made me realize how fortunate I was. I began volunteering more regularly with the same organization as well as places such as Food-share and a retirement home with residents who have memory loss. SAM and the retirement home mattered the most to me because I have close relatives who have schizophrenia and have died from cancer. Volunteering with these organizations made me realize how fortunate I was and inspired me to keep striving. This gave me a new perspective on life and I became more optimistic and outgoing. In addition to volunteering, I found a job, I began weightlifting, and I became much more social. In changing the way I think, I learned that life continues and that I still have time to improve myself.…

Although they had nothing they were still happy people and when we would give them an item such as clothes, toys, or even just basic medicine, they looked so happy because items like clothes, toys, and basic medicine change their life and the Dominican people were very grateful for them. During this trip I realized that in life I take many things for granted and that some of the items I feel are just a part of everyday life and are nothing special are something that can change someone's life. Community service makes me a better person because I recognize the luxuries in life that I am given compared to other people. Serving the least favored open up my eyes to the world round me and shows me what the world is really like outside of my bubble. When I participate community service I become aware that in order to have a happy life you do not need to have the most expensive items all you need are people around you who love and support you. Another realization when performing community service is that you register that helping other people is a very important action to take in order to help the people's lives get better so they can have more opportunities in the world because most of…

One of my most meaningful service opportunities was volunteering in the Utah Special Olympics last June. I spent the morning and early afternoon managing the Track and Field events of the Summer Games with friends and leaders from my church. This experience gave me a welcome change of perspective and an opportunity to focus on something greater than myself. On this day, I had the privilege of spending time with some of the kindest people I have ever met.…
