Last year, I lived a different experience that made me open my eyes and see all that I have, and how grateful I have to be. It was a community service in La Otra Banda de Carora, a little town of Venezuela. It is called LAS (Lasallista Apostolic Service). I went with two friends and an adult. There I met many friends from different cities. I attended there for ten days. The first 3 days were in the school, then we spent 5 days in the town, and the last 2 days we went back to the school. When we were in the school a group of adults gave us some preparation and they put us in teams. After we had known what we had to do and had been organized, we went to the town. This experience has affected me in different ways.
First, when I got there I remember that I got impressed when I saw the town. It was like a desert. They live far away from the city. They don’t have TV, videogames or electronic products. But they are happy. While the parents are working, children enjoy playing with a dirty ball, jumping in the dry weak floor, hiding behind the trees and getting together at night to see the sky full of stars.
Second, they don’t have restaurants or big malls with many stores. You must ask, What is their life like? Each house has like a mini farm at the back. They feed their animals and spend time in a little church at night.
Third, people there don’t think about what they have to wear or buy to fit in. They are really simple and pleasant people. They should serve you even though they know that they don’t have many things. But it is all about that, the simplicity.
All in all, I think that it was beautiful to went there. I thought that I would go to teach but I went to learn. They teach me the real meaning of life. And it isn’t about the material. It is about the happiness. It is about be yourself. And I learned we waste a lot of time in
