Nhs Personal Statement
I want to be a member of the Heritage Grove Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society because I believe that I display good leadership skills, citizenship, character and service to my community.
I believe that my leadership skills are exceptional for a person my age. In classroom activities, I enjoy being in charge of projects and assignments. Many of my teachers throughout the years have told me that I have great leadership skills. In my soccer team, I was voted by my peers to be co-captain and have been proudly doing it for two years now. As for showing citizenship, I participate in the school community by helping in many school fundraisers and events. I am a proud member of the Heritage Grove Student Council and participated in Best Buddies, a program where you befriend a special needs student. I am involved in the Plainfield community by participating in the Wounded Warrior 5k and donating money to St.Baldrick’s as well as Wounded Warriors. I also volunteer at the elementary schools such as Eagle Pointe Elementary and Liberty Elementary.

When I was younger, I participated in Girl Scouts where we volunteered in food pantries, senior centers, hospitals, animal shelters and charities for the less fortunate. We also participated in service projects such as making cards for veterans, making blankets for hospitals and the homeless, and made care packages for veterans and the hurricane victims. Volunteering is important to me because I had an aunt that unfortunately died of cancer and I feel that no one should have to go through the pain and suffering that she did.
As my community service, I helped out at a facility called Feed My Starving Children. While there, you make food for starving children throughout the world. This was a very eye opening experience to me and it made me realize how fortunate I am to have a home, food and other things that some children/families don’t

In high school, I joined Zonta Club to be involved with school and community. Zonta Club gave me an opportunity to reach out to people that had helped others and inspired other students to do the same. One of the unforgettable moments was when I volunteered in a fundraiser to help Alzheimer's disease. It was an event, called Rock-a-Thon, where kids and adults were together to raise awareness those who had the disease. Everyone was participating in the activities that were available in the event. There were games that both kids and elders could play with. They showed stories about the importance of being aware and helping those with Alzheimer’s disease. The event had shaped my views on giving back to the community. Service was not only about giving back, but it is also about learning from others. The joy that the people had even when there was a sickness in their life was incredible. It made me realize how I was fortunate to be living a life without the disease. The fundraiser had made me learn about the people in my town and the obstacles that had to endure and were still enduring. The event had impact the involvement and the appreciation I have over the…

I've volunteered in a number of places and many events, but the one's that have left an impact on me is my time spent at The Women's safe house and Guardian Angels shop and food pantry. They both helped my family through the crisis of leaving my abusive father financially, emotionally, and physically. At the Woman safe house I couldn't help but see the kids and teenager that I was babysitting and see myself in there place and I quickly became that mentor I and help them see past the darkness and into their bright futures. I wanted to give back to the guardian angels for helping us with clothes and food so now I help run their thrift shop and work as the secretary during pantry day. All the people I serve are in the place my family and I was…

The volunteering experiences I had really impacted my life, from volunteering at the 2013 First Coast Heart walk, to volunteering at Step Out and Walk to Stop Diabetes. At the Heart Walk I was in charge of the Kids Zone where I was responsible for kid’s safety, and at the Diabetes Walk I was responsible for greeting the walkers and making sure they got directed to their rightful stations. Being able to help those around me opened my eyes to the world. I am no longer self-centered about my life but rather focused on my fellow mankind. These valuable experiences have set a pattern in my life to keep helping others and serve my community annually. I feel that I have become a better person by volunteering, and that only through volunteering can I fulfill my purpose for existence. My experiences from volunteering at these two events were some of my most defining moments in my life.…

I had no intention of becoming involved in community service. As a high school sophomore, I was required to complete five hours of volunteer work in order to join the National Honor Society. I cleaned and organized bookshelves at my local library, and that was that. Over the next year, I volunteered with school cleaning, dance set-up, and other events not out of graciousness or compassion, but solely to maintain my NHS membership. However, as a junior, a teacher nominated me for the United Way Youth Board of Baldwin County, Alabama. Youth Board, an organization designed to encourage volunteer work among adolescents, completely changed my perspective and fostered in me a passion for community service. With this organization, I was able to collect children's books, install free libraries around my community, organize a food bank, and raise both monetary support and awareness for the United Way. As well, it inspired me to start knitting preemie hats, become a lead volunteer at my local library, and…

    Community Service

Community service isn’t about padding one’s resume, it isn’t about doing things so that one might be proud and arrogant about it. But it is the dawning realization of to the greater understanding our humanity, our fragility and a greater appreciation of the great lives that so many of us lead and deem to be “normal” when it pretty much is extraordinary in its own respect relative to many other individuals around the world. I spent my hours, dedicated to Community service, as an intern at the North Shore Long Island Jewish Hospital. Although taking part in this internship was initiated in order to further my knowledge and experience in the medical field, I was taught how to make relations with unknown people that were for the most part, ill. This has been one of the greatest experiences because I got the chance to interact with many different types of people including doctors, nurses, hospital staff members, and patients. This was a double gift for me because my interests in medicine have been greatly expanded and I was given the honor of being able to help those that were in need, whether it was reading a short book to them, or even closing the curtain in their room upon their request.…

I am a member of the United States Air Force and had the opportunity to serve on humanitarian medical missions. There are the most humbling experiences I have had. We bring medical care to remote areas, and give basic and extensive care to people that have never seen a doctor in their lives. The team of surgeons I served with was able to give a smile and a chance of a normal life to an infant that had a cleft lip. Seeing the reaction of their parents after they saw their kid was priceless, it does not get better than…
