As result, the boy learned a new lesson from life and it was to never lie to make others happy and to follow your own instincts, principles and convictions, otherwise you will pay a high cost.…
Despite using essentially the same music to both opening numbers, Sondheim’s lyrics contrasts each other both in theme and in vocabulary that it provides a completely unique atmosphere for the audience. In the opening number “Bounce” it is important to notice the usage of rhyme particularly in the duet portions of the song “You’re hot, then you’re not… Find a new road/Forge a new trail/Bounce” (5-26). In this passage, Sondheim invokes his mentor Oscar Hammerstein’s purpose of rhyme is to give a character intellect and reveal an important motif to the story. In this passage, Sondheim utilizes a combination of internal and true end rhymes to give the audience an impression of an educational background. Beginning with an internal true rhyme “You’re…
A tattoo is like poetry, because there is always more to the story than what meets the eye! The sonnet “First Poem for You” by Kim Addonizio is a riveting piece of poetry that uses symbolization to help guide the readers to understand the emotions and feelings the woman has towards her partner. Visual and tactile imagery used within this poem helps readers interpret the meaning of the poem. The theme is longevity and the true meaning of a relationship. In Addonizio “First Poem for You,” Addonizio utilizes literary elements to develop the story and detail a fictional character that is in love with a man that has permanent tattoos. Upon analyzing the symbols, visual imagery and theme throughout this poem the readers will better comprehend the poem to its entirety; these elements symbolize permanence, which is the meaning of the entire poem.…
In the story Chris keeps coming back to his grandfather’s home with useless things that he is trying to sell. Although everyone their tries to put it nicely that it is a waste of time and that what he should go back home and help out Chris won’t listen. In the poem the father says “ …to have no shame over having been a fool, yet learning something out of every folly…” this would have helped Chris in understanding that although he makes mistakes he should stop making the same silly mistake over and over again.…
As a child progresses in their life, they learn proper behavior; most of which is learned through mistakes. For example, if a child participates in an immoral act, such as swearing, a parent could yell at that child and punish them for cursing. By punishing a child for doing something wrong, the child realizes they made a mistake, and will be less likely to make the same mistake in the future. However, if the parent had not yelled at the child, the child would not know any better and most likely continue cursing. The method of a child learning by mistakes is very effective in any situation, and instead of fearing mistakes, children can learn to embrace errors and move forward with maturity, success and wisdom. In To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Jem and Scout Finch…
Where you are can definitely affect who you are. It can determine what you learn, your personality, and even influence some thoughts and actions. In the book Son, by Lois Lowry, this is very obvious. The main character; Claire, is given a second chance at life when she gets amnesia and washes up on the shore of a village in the middle of nowhere. She learns about different things while here, and acts differently as well. When she finally gets back her memories, she is scared of the animals on the island no matter the size, because she had no knowledge of them in her past life.…
Both poems describe, show examples, and compare things to their loves, yet both have different attitudes towards their lovers. Edmund says noble things about his lover, and William says ruthless things about his lover.…
The first order of business in a poem is to establish situation and mood, and Roethke selects the father’s drinking as the foremost fact to be conveyed. The tone is slightly comic, as the speaker suggests that there was enough alcohol on the father’s breath to inebriate a child. This observation implies that the father had consumed a substantial amount of whiskey, since the smell of it was very potent. These lines also establish a closeness between the two figures. The poem is a direct address from the son to the father, evoking a feeling of intimacy between them.…
In this poem “The Mother” it was this mother that had many abortions. This speaker was having an emotional breakdown. For example, “I have heard in the voices of the wind the voices of my dim killed children” (Brooks 1940). When reading ‘’The Mother’’ the speaker talked about her and focused on the children she aborted. But the speaker never mentioned a father. So, after realizing she did not mention a father this question came to an understanding. Why do people have different emotional and physical feelings after abortions? When asking that question by people it means men and women. There is evidence of when it comes to abortions, many people do not think about the men withdrawals. Abortions, which are the discontinuation of a pregnancy before…
The ultimate goal of most parents is to see that their child succeeds in life. While this may be the sole for most, fathers also expect more from their children, as is evident in author Lord Chesterfield’s letter to his son traveling far from home. The strategies used by Chesterfield not only display his desired intentions for his son, but, also, the rhetorical strategies implemented in the letter reveal the values Chesterfield holds as true. In order to persuade his son that the knowledge he holds is pertinent, Chesterfield first disbands the notion that parents only give advice to induce suffering in the child, then ties the ability, and pride of himself to the success of his son and finally suggests that to knowledge held by his son is…
The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…
Lorna Dee Cervantes' poem, “Poema para los Californios Muertos” (“Poem for the Dead Californios”), is a commentary on what happened to the original inhabitants of California when California was still Mexico, and an address to the speaker's dead ancestors. Utilizing a unique dynamic, consistently alternating between Spanish and English, Cervantes accurately represents the fear, hatred, and humility experienced by the “Californios” through rhythm, arrangement, tone, and most importantly, through use of language.…
“Letter to My Son,” written by Ta-Nehisi Coates in 2015, was in all essentiality advice. The article begins with the author describing his own sadness at the distance between a country built on a dream, and the sobering reality he saw. He continues on to talk about how his body, his son’s body, and the bodies of many of their peers around them, are very often going to be at the mercy of people around them. Coates then speaks of escaping the danger of having his own body at the mercy of another, and his desire to rescue himself through “a clash with the streets.” Cue a change of tone in the letter as it moves on to speak of the author’s “Mecca”. Which in this case means a holy city, or a place of light and perfection. For Coates, this place…
“Slaveship,” by Lucille Clifton, is a free verse poem from the perspective of slaves that the white men capture and trade in the slave trade, forcing them to travel on the Middle Passage. Ironically, the ships bear the names of religious symbols and figures such as Jesus, Angel of God, and Grace of God (lines 14-15) even though the act of slavery is one of the most sinful systems in the eyes of these slaves and in the eyes of all decent human beings.…
Mothers and Fathers around the world have tried to give advice to their sons since the beginning of time. Langston Hughes’s “Mother to Son” and Peter Meinke’s “Advice to Son” have many things that are common with each other; nevertheless, there are drastic differences when they are written. The time periods that these poems are written have grand influence in the poem's message.…
