This is significant because despite being out in the woods, one has access to things such as running water and its many useful applications. For example, the running water can be used to do chores such as wash the dishes, provide a way to acquire clean water for food preparation, and even allows one to take a cold shower under certain circumstances. As a result, the camping experience can be tackled with the hygienic cleanliness usually left at less modernly accommodating campsites. This results in a pleasing camping experience where you are able to utilize the conventions of a sink in the wilderness, moreover this also includes clean facilities in case some would rather not rough it out in the woods when it comes time for nature to take its…

Other items of “necessity” were chosen for a sense of security, no matter how useless, and some for the feeling of control over a small part of their lives. Lee Strunk carries a slingshot so that ammo “would never be a problem,” (396) against men with guns and grenades. It all goes back to human mastery of fire to provide warmth, light and a means of preparing more palatable and easily digestible foods. To the early humans, fire was the equivalent of having a little sun with them wherever they needed or wanted to go. With this energy available at anytime and anyplace, humans could begin to spread about the world and thrive, regardless of the climate or amount of sunlight available. It provided the power for humans to begin their mastery of Earth as a species, less vulnerable to extinction than all other animal species, yet with a greater ability to bring about change — for good or bad.…

Imagine spending thirty days alone in a tent or a cabin in the wilderness with no technology, electricity, running water, and any form of communication. Every day you wake up to the sight of the beautiful, tall trees and the various wildlife living in the area. Most of the time, you can hear the many sounds of nature: the majestic songs of birds, the whistling in the wind, and trees rustling. But sometimes all you can hear is nothing but silence. Most of us would not be able to do this and we would most likely want to be anywhere but here. Not many people will experience living in the wilderness, but for those who have will have memories to treasure forever. Among those people who would choose this way of living is Chris McCandless.…

(page 93-94). When the fire of hope slaked, it awoke again; it is mean that the fire of hope will be endlessly protected to father and son.…
“To Build a Fire” demonstrates numerous examples of the philosophical theory of naturalism that “the universe is indifferent to human beings, and people are at the mercy of natural forces over which they have little control”. According to this statement, human life is very fragile. The fact that this story takes place in the Yukon region, one should know that the natural forces are at its strongest. This would cause an intelligent person to prepare, but not in this case.…

Trisha had used her surroundings exceptionally well. After she ran out of food from her lunch she had to find another source of food. She was able to find certain leaves, nuts, and berries that are edible. As another source of food, she had done some fishing, because she got really hungry. She swore to never talk about it with anyone once she was out of the woods because she was so disgusted by it. She would use the streams and rivers she was near as her drinking and cleaning water, even though the water got her really sick. She was also able to use her surroundings to make small shelters as she traveled. Trisha used twigs and branches to either put on top of her as she slept or made a fort out of it. This was to try and keep her partially warm, block off the wind and rain, and to keep animals out. She also used her rain poncho as a blanket to try and keep herself warm on cold nights.…
Food deserts are places where at least 500 people or a third of the population reside more than one mile from a supermarket or large grocery store — according to the CDC, “Food deserts are areas that lack access to affordable fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk, and other foods that make up the full range of a healthy diet” (CDC). Furthermore, these food-deprived areas may exist in both rural or urban areas, but only in locations where there are geographic or socio-economic problems.…
You become stranded in the Sahara desert with one other person, a stranger you do not know. Over the next week the stranger passes away and for you to survive you must resource the lifeless body. Would you do it? In Jack London 's To Build a Fire, A man goes on a tough journey through the Yukon alone ignoring the apparent signs of danger only wanting to push through the journey as fast as possible. Like Jack London 's story in Stephen King 's Survivor Type Richard Pine an ex-medical doctor becomes stranded on an island with no food or water with after a terrible ship malfunction. The only way for him to survive is for him to cut of limbs and eat himself. Lastly to help understand these two short stories there is Laurence Gonzales ' The 12 Rules of Survival depicting the necessary steps and characteristics it take to survive in these small circumstances and be able to survive just like the survey Personal Characteristics of Resilient People by Jamie Zartler and Mary Rodeback. Only certain people in the world have these traits to survive. To be able to strive for survival people must have an easy temperament or disposition, be a rescuer, not a victim and do whatever is necessary.…
