Informational Essay
The Berlin wall was built in Germany on August 13, 1961. This separated western and eastern Germany. It surrounded all of east Germany and was built a little bit after World War two. This was such a big event because several people died trying to escape, and many families got separated. Of course this wall of danger and depression got torn down on November 9, 1989.
First a question about this wall would be. Why was it put up in the first place? Well the east wanted to keep out the western people they called “fascists” and they wanted to stop the flow of emigrants. Also as stated earlier the wall was put up a little bit after world war two, and during the end of world war two the nation of Germany got split into 4 allied lands this was called the “allied occupation zones”. This side was way more strict than the west and several people tried to escape the wall, but most of them died from either the stasi finding out and killing them or they drowned, fell and broke bones, or they just got hurt really bad. Next, people were so desperate to eat and stay alive they would stand in line for days not knowing what they are going to buy, and hoping that if they don't want it they can trade it with somebody for something better. Also it was hard to buy because they only got $250 a month and had to pay $6 a month for rent so they were only left with $244 for a month. Like what was mentioned earlier in the text the stasi found out about people's plan how did they do that well families and friend would turn to the stasi and give them info about someone's action or what they are saying, and stasi would listen to people's conversations through special telephone wires hidden throughout the house.
In conclusion, the Berlin wall was a time of depression and sadness. But it ended and is back to normal but it can never be
