What Was The Main Cause Of The First World War
The first major cause of the First World War was the Treaty of Frankfurt. This treaty was signed as a direct result of the end of the Franco-Prussian War. The Franco-Prussian war was started on July 19, 1870, and the treaty was signed on May 10, 1871 (Doerr). This victory over the French helped prove the German empire as a major military force. After the victory the Treaty of Frankfurt was created by the German Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck . Otto von Bismarck was the leader that had masterminded the war that led to the German empire (Doerr). The French leader at the time was Alphonose Thiers, who was very skeptical about the start of the Franco-Prussian War. The Treaty of Frankfurt stated the annexation of France provinces Alsace and Lorraine by Germany (Doerr). …show more content…
Germans would have control over this French territory until the a 5 billion Franc indemnity was paid by the French over a four year period. Until this was paid most of northeastern France would be occupied by German troops (Doerr). Otto von Bismarck laid down such harsh punishment on France in order to create a more secure border for Germany. This border would allow for the Vosges Mountains of Alsace and fortresses of Loraine to prevent France from reaching southern Germany. Bismarck also believed that when the French seeked revenge he would be well prepared. The German control of provinces of Alsace and Lorraine for 3 years caused major tension between France and the German Empire. This tension was a major contributor in World War 1, since it left France a reason to seek revenge on the German Empire (Greenspan) “ The Treaty of Frankfurt was thought to be a major mistake and contributor to World War 1. Many historians regard the Treaty of Frankfurt as a major error”

As a region with ambiguous boundary distributions, Alsace-Lorraine had created conflict between the two countries of France and German, establishing controversy as to whether the country would come under whose control after the Franco-Prussian War when the region was ceded to Prussia. While newly united Germans felt they knew better what is good for them and forced its ethnic identity on the Alsace-Lorraine people, France, in recovery, and its nationalistic aspiration was devastated by the war; and within the region itself, conflictions became inevitable due to the fact that a portion of the population rejected Germanization and held sentiment toward France, and the others were impressed and took pride in lining up with the German states.…

The Treaty of Versailles aided in the outbreak of World War II because it left Germany weak, unstable, and open to fascist rulers taking over. It was the peace settlement signed after World War I between the Allies and the Germans. The countries that lost World War I (Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Turkey) were especially dissatisfied with the treaty. However, the treaty was received very badly within Germany. The nation had been blamed entirely for WWI and had been forced to pay compensation to the allies under the war guilt clause of the treaty. Under the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was severely punished with huge war reparations, territorial losses, and strict limits on its rights to develop militarily. These unfair restrictions not only created political discontent and economic chaos in Germany, but bitter resentment towards the victors of the First World War. The German people felt that they had never been truly defeated in battle since the country had never been conquered. It helped put Germany into a huge depression. People were dissatisfied with the government and voted to power a ruler named Adolf Hitler who promised to rip up the Treaty of Versailles.…

The Treaty of Versailles (signed 28th June 1919) had huge impact on the political instability within Germany between 1919 and 1923. It consisted of 440 Articles setting out the terms for Germany to abide by. The treaty angered the German people as they felt stabbed in the back believing it to be unfair and shameful. The terms involved Germany taking the blame for the First World War and the reduction of their army which both had a political affect within the country. It humiliated the German people as they felt no blame for the war and they were very proud of their army. The anger the people felt left an opening for extremist left wing and right wing parties to gain popularity.…

Initially, the Treaty of Versaille expected Germany to pay 5 billion dollars in reparations until a committee met in 1921, when 25 billion more were demanded. This economic drain on their economy most likely was the single largest factor in intensifying Germany's hostility toward Great Britain and France. This demand was totally unfeasible, for it would literally crush the German economy and starve the population.…

Wilson addressed, in point VIII, the need for sovereignty of Alsace-Lorraine and the freeing of French territory. By the 1900s it was second nature for Germany to revert to combat and strong leadership - i.e. during the 1st World War and Hitler’s totalitarianism during the 2nd World War. The victory over France in 1870 sowed the seeds for what can only be described as a ‘tragic harvest that was ultimately reaped’; when France actively opposed Germany in the 1st World War. The result of two wars in quick succession (that had badly affected France), and the loss of Alsace Lorraine, led Georges Clemenceau to press for a harsh treaty in the 1919 Versailles Conference. Germany then developed a desire for vengeance and some of the roots that subsequently led to the 2nd World War were created.…
