On August 28, 1914 the final straw was broken and WWI began. The war itself was the culmination of failed treaties, promisses and misguided leadership. Hard to choose what caused the war to start, but if anything i belive the Russian's have the most impact on the war. In order to come to this conclusion we have to assesses the trials and tribulations each nation took to get the big stage in 1914. The 19th centry marked the age of the rise and fall of great eurpean powers. The 20th centry set the stage for the war, as tensions already high from the previous century, old rivarlies are rekindled and chaos ensued. What came as a consequence was the Franco-Prussian war. In June of 1870 the throne of Spain was offered to Prince Leopold of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen the cousin of King William of Prussia. Napolean III feared that German conquest of Spain would negatively influence the French in that providence. Bismarck, whose goal was to start a war announced the Ems dispatch. Bismarck made King Williams report open to the pubilic albeit he edited it to make it subdue the French into war and it worked. Because France initiated the war Bismarck was able to get the support of the Southern German states seeing as how Prussia would seem to be in a defensive position. An embarrising defeat for the French,William of Prussia became Emporer of Germany, Napolean III was captured by Otto Van Bismarck and subsequently exiled from France but the biggest consequence from this was the reperations France had to pay for the war and the loss of Alsace-Lorraine and for decades the French tried to do anything to gain that territory back to no avail.
