Spartacus: A Slave Rebellion In time, all countries have there problems that are not being solved. During this time the people in this country are becoming discomfited as the problem is not being solved. They grow tired and weary of the problem and begin to want to change or solve it under their own circumstances. This is the start of a rebellion, a violent or open resistance to a government or ruler. These rebellions can be justified or also could be very awful and atrocious. One rebellin that was justified and had great importance of that time period was the Spartacus slave rebellion. this rebellion was started by a group of enslaved gladiators wanting the right to be free of …show more content…
their torment. This rebellion was important For many reasons such as to show others that the low class can fight back, that the lower class is being treated wrong, and that the owners and government has too much power. It was justified in many ways such as the slaves were treated poorly, that they had the power and will to fight back like any other type of people, and the Roman Republic had an extreme amount of power that was needed lessened with the sacrifice of thier live .
Spartacus was a well know gladiator born in 109 B.C. as a Thracian citizen(Historynet). There is little known about Spartacus’s life before being enslaved into a gladiator camp at capua. At this slave camp the 70-80 men were forced to train vigorously in deathly manner. They would train with spears and other deadly weapons preparing for a fight to the death in the arena(livescience). The Arena is where they would force two or more slaves/gladiators fight to the death with those same deadly weapons they trained with. At this period in time people would pay to see people masacre each other in this arena. All of the men here would follow as Spartacus would say because of his great fighting abilities in the arena. He was there faith and leader through these tough times put on the slaves by the owner and his guards. For example some of these gruesome things the guards would do to the gladiators is if they weren't working hard enough they would feed them less or would be struck by a whip(livescience). As well as if they were new slaves they would be in shackles unless they were training(Historynet). They got few showers or baths. They were worked like mules to be sent into a ring of sand to fight and kill to live another day. They were not respected by the higher class. Sometimes the gladiators were forced to fight their own fellow friends, in the arena and at their slave camp. Most gladiators were enslaved criminals or bought slaves(abouteducation). All these punishments and torture that these gladiators suffered made it hard for them to live a decent life. These aspects show that the gladiators had a hard life and deserved to be treated better. This is why the rebellion had happened. One main reason they rebelled was because of the torment and sadistic ways they had to live by to survive. They rebelled because they were mistreated and tired of it. This is a huge reason why the gladiators had rebelled and fought for their freedom just like we Americans fought for ours.
Another huge reason the gladiators, led by the mighty Spartacus had rebelled against the Roman republic in 73 b.c. was because they had the right and will to. The Roman governors and noblemen believed that the gladiators were stupid and had no power, but they were extremely wrong. The gladiators felt more and more power as they fought and killed for there life in the arena. They felt they could over power such a weak force that has been opposing them(abouteducation). This gave the gladiators the idea that the could fight back, the worst that could happen is they die which they are already doing. For example Spartacus was at the time of the rebellion a huge star in the arena and had great influence on the roman republic because of his fame. He set the republic up and decreased their defenses while they gawked at his fame and successfulness. At this time while the owners of the Capua slave camp were distracted 70-80 gladiator/slaves fought and murdered every noblemen and guard at the camp(livescience). They were of course lead by the magnificent Spartacus, he lead them out of town and on top of Mount Vesuvius(historynet). At this point the roman republic had not thought that slave rebellion was much of a hazard to their people. As the Roman Republic had not urgently taken precautions to the rebellion the slave army had grown to about 90,000-120,000(historynet). Spartacus had not wanted to destroy the roman republic but to get him and his men freedom. He knew that the gladiators had power over the roman republic that they had the power to do what they wanted, but he also had a man by the name of Crixus who wanted revenge for what had happened to him. Crixus unwisely lead about 30,000 of these men down the coast of Greece fading the towns they came by and destroying them when they were done with them and cost most of these men their lives including his own. The gladiators at this time felt the power they had and knew they had done what was not expected and that was successfully rebelling against the roman republic(abouteducation). This was a turning point in many people’s eyes because all those low class and poor people in the roman republic realized that the had the strenght to fight back and that what they did really meant something. This also was the time that the roman republic started to notice that the rebels were becoming a hazard to their people and country(historynet). They start to form troops and begin to attack the slave that had stayed with spartacus on Mount Vesuvius.
The third and final main reason the slave rebellion was justified was because the Roman Republic had a extreme amount of power of it’s people and the country itself.
The noblemen and people still in the Roman Republic would fear talking about the slaves and when did had terror in there voice. This was different from usual because the noblemen were supposedly untouchable and that the slaves were too weak to do anything about the power. The slaves knew they had the urgent power that was needed to fight back and they already begun to show that by the Roman republic start to attack them with uniformed military troops. At this stage in the rebellion the Slaves had been wining and had the higher power between the two forces(abouteducation). The Roman Republic did not like this so they decided that the threat had became outrageous and had to be stopped. The slaves had gained so much power that crixus and spartacus talked about attacking Rome itself instead of just raiding its countrysides(historynet). This decision was not decided because the Roman army had been sent by the Roman Republic to destroy the slaves and what they had done. Spartacus lead his army to three victories before they finally fell to the Roman Republic, “6,000 of the slaves that had not died in battle were crucified for their actions”(historynet). The fact that these men had gave there life to fight for there freedom and to knock down this bully of a government was a great achievement. It is a great feat what they had done they “Knocked down goliath” and helped the world know that no matter what the conditions we can form together and fight for what is
right.
To conclude this rebellion was justified in three main ways because they were treated wrong and harshly, the had the right and will to like any other people, and because the Roman republic had to much power that had to be lessened by the sacrifice of these honorable men. Spartacus was the leader of the slave rebellion that had happened in 73B.C. in Rome. They had been treated awful and were put through very cruel torture to live another day. The were forced to fight to the death in arena and kill others to see the sunlight of the next day. Then the fame of Spartacus had caught the powerful Roman Republic of guard and the slaves had revolted and killed every nobleman and guard at the slave camp Capua. At this stage in the rebellion they had know that the Roman republic was weak and they had more power and will then they did. Spartacus then lead his men up to Mount Vesuvius where they grew to a huge army. Then there power was so great that the Roman Republic realized they needed to stop them before they take over Rome. This brings us to the final reason that this rebellion is was justified and that is the sacrifice these men went to t prove that the Roman Republic can be fought. It showed the world that even the smallest of men can fight back against the powerful government and make a difference. Lastly the Roman republic finally defeat they slave army , after three successful victories by the slave army. Again this rebellion showed the war that the lower class can fight back and can make a huge impact on what happens. This rebellion was a huge impact on the way people were treated and it made the government think much more about what they were doing to people that could fight back at any time.
