What´s Photodynamic Therapy Effective?

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is considered as an effective, non-invasive, economical treatment for cancers and premalignant conditions. PDT involves selective uptake and localization of a photosensitizer into specific tumor cell/tissue type, irradiation of the photosensitizer with predetermined intense doses of light to activate the photosensitizer, and generation of ROS that kill nearby abnormal cell. However, the light needed to activate photosensitizers penetrates only about a centimeter (approximately one-third of an inch) of tissue.
