“At its most basic it is the study of patterns in human behaviour” (Jenkins, Richard, (2002) "What is sociology?" pg.15 ch, 2)
I believe that sociology is the study of the influence on the society brought by human interactions and human factors outside of their environment, and the whole point of studying sociology is that to understand the patterns in human behaviours in order to apply them into a wider society, and joint individual problems and public problems together.
Firstly, sociology enables us to theoretically identify the patterns in our everyday life and culture change, and helps developing the quality of life.
For example, the number of use of mobile phones have been rapidly increasing since the first mobile phone was invented in 1973 and now 75,750,000 mobile phones are used in UK (Dec, 2013, Data from Wikipedia) which is 122.9% of phones as per cartage of population. This shows that the society have been becoming much easier to integrate with other people and more active in communication wise, which shows a dramatic change of patterns of society, because setting location becomes less of a problem and people are no longer have to send letters in order to set meeting locations.
Sociology theoretically identifies these changes of patterns of communication and effects on our everyday life, and helped improving the quality of life by identifying the needs of mobile phones in the society for example.
Also it can be used to distinguish the difference between common sense and sociological thinking, therefore, there are always logical thinking and evidence behind the studies, which helps to back up the arguments, whereas “common sense” genially comes from experiences from everyday life but has no studies behind it, so that it may not accurate or reliable. But on the other hand, there are some factors that cannot be explained in sociological ways, such as statements.
“But a thing cannot be explained in terms of
