Mr. Black has a very bad personality. He is always angry and aggravated. His kids are scared of him. When Blacky doesn’t go fishing with him and goes to Dumby’s funeral, Blacky says, ‘he’s going to spificate me.’ When he comes back and the days after, Blacky avoids his dad as much as he can. Black’s personality stays the same. He is the same drunken violent non social dad throughout the entire book. At the start of the novel, Mr. Black and Blacky go fishing, and after a lot of problems, Mr. Black calls Blacky, ‘A gutless wonder.’ This puts a lot of pressure on Blacky to impress his dad to show that he is not a gutless wonder and that he is a strong man that he can be proud of. I think this gets to Blacky a little bit. Especially when he tries to impress Cathy on the beach and fails, he thinks to himself, ‘The old man is right, I am gutless.’
There is one point, at the Grand Final celebrations, where he shook Blacky’s hand, ‘You done real well, it was a gutsy effort.’ But that was nothing. I think because everyone was proud of Blacky’s efforts, Mr. Black acted as if he cared, but he didn’t even see what happened. As the family starts to slowly turn on him, he doesn’t see it coming and he continues to act the same way.
