When Did The Kkks Start
What was the KKK? How did it start? What were they trying to accomplish? The Ku Klux Klan originated in the southern United States. In the 1860's because they wanted America to be all white and they thought they were better than any other race.
The KKK originated in the southern United States. It started in the late 1860’s and faded away during the 1870’s. It originated in Pulaski, Tennessee. Some known members of the KKK are Harry Truman, Edward Jackson, Robert Byrd, and Hugo Black. The KKK included bombings of black schools and churches. They wore all white and normally went out at night.

    The Ku Klux Klan was formed during the end of the Civil War in order to deny the civil rights of Southern African Americans. They are one of the oldest hate groups in America with a violent history that opposed everyone that wasn’t a white, protestant, Christian American. This includes Jewish, lesbian, gay, and immigrant individuals. Only recently do they allow Catholics into their numbers. They are infamous in popular culture as wearing white robes and hoods, burning crosses, lynching people of other races, and lobbying for sympathetic politicians. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the KKK currently estimates 5,000 to 8,000 members in various chapters. The Loyal White Knights and The Knights Party of the KKK have websites that post propaganda, news, faqs, events calendars, and applications for membership. They use these websites as ways to get potential members to come out to their functions. For instance, the Loyal White Kinghts Realm of Texas is having a meet and greet in Temple, TX on November 2, 2013.     The first klan began in Tennessee, by six Confederate Army Officers, in the winter of 1865. Ku klux Klan rose about four million and spread from the South into the Midwest region and Northern states and even into Canada. The name of the Ku Klux Klan is “derived from the Grrek word 'kyklos,' meaning circle” (Wikimedia Foundation). ‘Klan was added for the purpose of alliteration” (“Ku Klux Klan”). The infamous burning-cross icon became a symbol of the KKK in the 1920’s, which was one of many tactics used for intimidation. Perhaps the most distinguishing characteristic of Klan members were the white robes they wore along with cone shaped hats that covered their faces. These costumes accomplished their goal of making them look more outlandish and terrifying, and for the intimidation of their victims (Smith). The Klan was pretty selective in accepting members, only WASPs (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants) could become members. These members possessed the ideology of white supremacy to all other races and ethnic divisions, similar to the concept of Neo-Nazism, however they claim to have based their beliefs on Christian values and nativism. It is often thought that the KKK only hated African-Americans, but many other groups acquired hatred from the Klan, such as Jews, Catholics , homosexuals and various immigrant groups.
