When Does Atticus Show Courage In To Kill A Mockingbird
Courage Courage is the ability to do something that one knows is difficult or even dangerous. Winston Churchill once said “ Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen. In To Kill a Mockingbird Scout, Jem, and Atticus all show courage. Atticus, a lawyer in Alabama in the 1930s, demonstrated an extensive amount of courage. One way he showed courage was by defending Tom Robinson in court. He knew that the jury would find Tom guilty because of racism but, chose to defend him anyway. Atticus also demonstrated bravery when he protected Tom Robinson from Mr. Cunningham and his gang. By his actions he saved Tom from being killed. Lastly, Atticus tried to take the blame for Bob Ewell’s
death. Even though Sheriff Tate would not let him take the blame, Atticus still protected Boo Radley. Atticus defended and protected Tom as well as Boo Radley, showing a great deal of courage. Scout, the seven-year-old daughter of Atticus Finch, was very courageous. She sticks up for her family when the townspeople are gossiping about them. She wanted to fight but instead held her head high. Scout shows courage when she talks Mr. Cunningham out of attacking Tom Robinson. While talking to him about his son, Walter, she distracted him from hurting Tom. When Bob Ewell attacks Scout and Jem, she didn’t panic. Scout is able to fight back and stay safe. By keeping her head high, not panicking, and defending herself Scout shows how strong she is. Jem, Atticus’s son and Scout’s brother, was a courageous boy. He sticks up for scout and himself when they are being bullied at school. He supports his family when his classmates are making fun of them. Jem refuses to leave Atticus when Mr. Cunningham tried to beat Tom Robinson. Mr. Cunningham called off his attack when he realized there were children present. Finally, Jem shows bravery when Mr. Ewell when he tried to kill Scout. Even though he gets his arm broken, they both walk away safely. Jem protects his father and sister, in this way he showed courage. Scout, Jem, and Atticus showed courage in different ways. From keeping their heads held high to standing up for what was right, all three characters were very brave. We should all strive to be as courageous as these three characters.
