When George Shot Lennie Essay
The story ended when George shot Lennie in the back of the head. He didn’t want Lennie to feel the pain, so he tried to picture their American dream to take Lennie's attention away.
Did George have to shoot Lennie? Were there other options and alternatives to shooting his best friend? When George made the decision to kill Lennie, he felt that he had no other choice but to shoot Lennie. George knew that he didn’t want to continue living and travel with Lennie anymore, because he fears that Lennie will make the same mistakes every time. “For a moment he seemed bewildered. And then he whispered in fright, I done a bad thing. I done another bad thing.” ( page.91) Lennie is a danger to those around him. He is a big problem to the community and his close friends. He stood crying, his fist lost in Lennie’s paw.” ( page.64) If George wasn’t going to kill Lennie first, then Curley was planning a slow killing to Lennie.
Curley want a revenge, since Lennie broke his hand and embarrassed him last time they’ve met.Curley said he was going to shoot Lennie in the stomach. It would be a painful death if Curley gets to do the killing. Lennie will suffer and George didn’t want to see his best friend killed by some stranger they didn’t like. “ I’ll shoot him in the guts. Come on, you guys.” He ran furiously out of the barn. (page.96) I understood that some people may argue that George could have just stopped Lennie and handed him to the police for the justice to take over the situation. Lennie would be jail for a long time and might get institutionalized for his odd behaviors. This could help Lennie to understand the world better, since there will be people in the hospital to look over him. Although this might seems like a good idea, but Lennie will most likely be execute by the law enforcement. The institution won’t understand Lennie’s mental problems; He will get more in trouble in there since George won’t be around to help him get
better.
