The music video of When You Were Young by The Killers shows the story of a young woman’s tragic marriage through flashbacks while in the present she is about to jump off a mountain and kill herself. It is set in the present (video made in 2006) in a small town somewhere in Mexico. This is shown by the ethnicity of the actors and the costume which is relevant to place, being Mexico and the props like beer and phones which is present to the time period. The video explores themes such as loss of innocence, faith in religion and god, punishment by god, moving on, adultery and love.

In the first flashback he meets the girl outside of an old church (old ways) and is shown to reach down to her from above, like an angel. In christianaty the devil is an angel who fell from heaven as he rebelled against god. When the husband is introduced he is at first hidden behind the girl but as she walks forward he is revealed top to bottom as if he has fallen. The hat he is wearing is a black cowboy hat. The black represents evil and is generally a colour worn by the antagonists in film and the cowboy hat shows symbolism of outlawlessness and rebellion. The fact that he is wearing a hat on a cloudy day suggests he is hiding from the heavens. His facial hair is in the style of a moustache and goatee which is commonly linked to the devil style of facial hair, hence the satanic link between goat skulls, sacrificing goats and the devil. The hat can also be seen as an object that is keeping him evil as it is sheltering gods influence. This is shown through the reconsilliation scene between wife and husband set in the present at the start and end of the music video. In this scene he is not wearing the black hat, therefore gods influence was put upon him so he could save her from suicide (a sin).
