Erwin G Communication 17 September, 2012 Informative Speech: Whey Protein I. Introduction a. Muscles!! Everyone wants them; guy’s wants big arms and girls wants nice toned bodies. But they aren’t easy to build. Trust me I know. b. Having the opportunity last semester to take a weight training class to try and get more muscle and bulk up I realized I would need some sort of supplement to help me build more muscle. I also learned that it takes a good workout routine and also strict dieting. This is the hardest part. c. One of the most important components of a good diet is whey protein. Okay so first off, what is whey protein? i. As Jim Stoppani explains, “Whey is a natural protein good for the body that is found in milk from cows. Before the 1960's the importance and value of whey went unrecognized and was used for feeding livestock or just simply dumped. Today though, companies now see the value of whey protein and set up production for the sole purpose in concentrating and purifying the protein”. (Stoppani, 2011) ii. There are many forms of protein you can buy there is whey protein, whey protein isolate, whey protein hydrolysate, and finally whey protein casein. You can find any of these at your local GNC or vitamin store. f. Moving on to my next point, how is the whey protein powder made? iii. Protein Powder is made through a complex process. Jim Stoppani breaks the process down for us. First, “The cow is milked-the raw form has a lot of sugar, in the form of lactose, and plenty of fat. Milk is pasteurized, or heated to temperatures that kill harmful bacteria. Casein and whey are separated. Whey is filtered to remove carbs and Trans farming whey concentrate. Whey concentrate is dried to form whey protein concentrate powder. Whey goes through more filtering, such as cross-flow microfiltration to form whey isolate. Whey isolate is dried to form whey protein isolate powder. Whey is hydrolyzed to break protein into smaller pieces. Whey hydrolysate is dried to form whey protein hydrolysate powder”. …show more content…

Finally, I’m going to talk about the benefit of taking whey protein and how it helps the body with amino acids. iv. Energy while working out and muscle growth can all happen with the use of three amino acids: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. Those three amino acids are all beneficial in the growth of muscles and having energy during workouts. And it just so happens that whey is one of the proteins that contain all three of those amino acids. Unlike other proteins, whey has a faster digestion rate. Because of its much faster rate of digestion, whey proteins can break down rapidly and those amino acids are sent to your muscle cells to help them grow and give you more energy. (Stoppani, 2011) v.
