White Tailed Deer
White tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are one of the most common species of mammals seen in North America, the most common of large animals actually. The last official count of deer in the USA and Canada was done in 1982, at which time 15000000 were found at an average of 3 deer in every square kilometer. The deer are very much native and were hunted even by Native Americans.

You may have even seen this species yourself. Some of the most common places to find them are in your own backyard, in parks, or even dazed at headlights in the middle of Winton Road. The deer is easy to spot. In the summer, it's coat is reddish-brown and in the winter it is buff. All year around its underside and tail are completely white as well as having a white spot on its neck.

The prime deer habitat consists of deciduous trees, primarily cottonwood, ash, willow, elm and box elder. However preferred, the woodland cover is not essential to the deer's survival.

In many areas, the deer have adapted to eat primarily agricultural crops (crops grown by humans). In many parts of the country, a deer's diet may consist of up to 50% farm grown corn. Obviously the deer eat some native foods, such as some trees and bushes, particularly buck brush and rose, but along with small amounts of dogwood, chokecherry, plum, red cedar, pine, and many other species of plants. Forbs, particularly sunflowers, are important, however grasses and sedges are used only briefly in spring and fall.

White tailed deer are the largest game animal in North America. This is due to their over abundance and annoyance to farmers. An average of 300000 deer are hunted down each year. A tragedy has been another 3000 are hit by cars every year. Many human efforts have been made to prevent these accidents, such as fencing and deer repellents near freeways, but many seem to think that hunting and controlling the population is the best way.

Deer hunters; Real Tree’s AP is the pattern for you! AP stands for, “All Purpose” and it certainly lives up to its name. With this pattern you will blend into any surrounding at any time of the day and any time of the year. The unique design of this pattern is open, neutral, and highly realistic. The hazy back ground elements and over-lapping tree limbs give this pattern an amazingly realistic three dimensional effect. The light, gray neutral base colors blend right into open or even rocky terrain. It has natural elements like mixed pine and hardwood limbs such as gum and oak trees that match most forests anywhere. Mossy Oak’s, “go to” pattern for deer hunting is called Mossy Oak New Break-Up Infinity. “Long name, little results in the field.” This pattern is pretty good, that is if all you want to do is hunt from an oak tree. Infinity is a very limited camouflage pattern. The camouflage features an oak tree bark back ground with oak limbs and dead leaves to try and create a three dimensional effect. The pattern isn’t nearly as versatile as Real Tree’s All Purpose camouflage pattern. It leaves you stuck out in the wide open because it doesn’t break up your out line, unless of course you’re high off the ground in an oak tree. So hunters, if you want to hide from deer this season and not be seen, then Real Tree All Purpose is the camouflage for you!…

As the population of whitetail deer continues to rise in Kentucky, chances of taking one increase as well. In “Kentucky Deer Season 2013: Hunting Forecast” Darren Warner of OutdoorLife.com states that “The current statewide population estimate for Kentucky's deer herd is about 900,000 animals.” Due to the abundancy of deer, during the apocalypse they will be a great source of food for you and your group. However, after the kill, most hunters do not know what to do next, and those who do often do not take the most ethical route to processing a deer. Compocalypse students need to know how to efficiently process a deer because venison will provide large, protein packed meal during the apocalypse and can also provide skin to make clothing out of,…

It’s November, so that means its deer season. Every year deer season starts on the second weekend of November and last for ten days. I get really excited around August because during this time my family and I start exploring the woods looking for signs of deer. We look for signs like scrapes on trees, footprints, and tall grass that looks like it has been laid on and flattened. We set salt blocks out around our tree stands and set our cameras out hoping to catch a picture of a big buck. After we finish all the preparing we wait until the first week of November. During the first week of November we go back to our stands, check the salt blocks, set new blocks out, and grab our cameras to take back home. Once we get home we look at the pictures…

One way to improve population is to start raising deer on farms and then taking them out and turning them lose in the wild. When hunting comes close to being taken away the price of hunting license will go up. After the price of deer hunting license goes up, hunting privileges will be taken away for a year or two in order to let the population of animals rise again. This would stop the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife from having to take hunting rights away and would help to raise the population of deer back up all at the same…

Not only is hunting an exhilarating experience but so is the feeling of being surrounded by wilderness. During winter times since I was 12 years old, my father would take me out on long drives in the middle of winter to hunting sites just outside of Edmonton. What made the drive not seem so long was the scenic route we would always take. Every once in a while I would see little white rabbits hopping around and leaving miniature footprints all in the snow next to the road. Further down the road we would pass a fairly big hill that had two pine trees at the top of it. I always wondered how long they had been there considering the fact that they were over thirty feet high. Finally we would get to the hunting ground and make are way down to a little patch of brush where we would crouch and wait for the deer to pass by. The feeling of the cold snow crunching under my boots, the frost covered branches of the bush we were nestled under, and all the little footprints that surrounded us gave me a feeling of unity with nature. After hiding in our spots for a long while, usually until my feet and toes were completely frozen it seemed, my father would whisper “Here comes one right now”. A few moments later I’d hear a loud bang and we’d be back on the road with our trophy and bragging rights. We have carried on this tradition every…
