White Teeth
White Teeth by Zadie Smith. White Teeth has many themes. Just like every other book. But what are this books theme? One of them come from the title, “Teeth”, Chance and Coincidence, Race and Ethnicity, Heritage and Legacy and Nature vs. Nurture.
White Teeth is about two best friends, Archie and Samad. In the beginning of the story Archie tries to commit suicide but fails when somebody comes up to him and questions what he is doing. He takes that as a sign that life still wants him around. So later that night he decides to catch a new year’s party, where he meets a young Jamaican woman named Clara. Soon Archie marries her. Samad also marries a young woman named Alsana. The couples don’t get along at first and later Alsana and Clara get pregnant at the same time. They give birth and Clara has a baby girl named Irie, Alsana has twin boys who they named Magid and Millat. The kids grow up and Magid and Millat live very diferent lives.

Zadie Smith puts out three manifestations of fundamentalism. The first two being “Kevin and Fate.” KEVIN satisfies Millat’s desire to be a gangster. Joshua (the Chalfen’s family son) becomes a member of FATE. FATE is a program that is against animal cruelty. But because the two boys, Joshua and Millat are against their fathers trying to keep them from becoming fundamentalists, they reject their roots and go fundamentalism.
Nature vs Nurture. Zadie presents this theme with the Chalfen couple. Where the wife Joyce is the nurturer and her husband Marcus is a believer in nature. Joyce believes she can take any plant and nurture any effect what wants to be fixed. For example, she believes that she can take Samad’s son Millat who is difficult to control and turn him around. She also feels that Millat and Irie are not successful kids because of the lack of a strong father figure, basically saying that they were not nurtured enough.
In conclusion, every book has many different themes, these happen to be the themes for this

The theme of a short story is the idea behind the plot of the story. In other words, it is not the actual events that happened throughout the story, but what the story is telling you. There are certain aspects that enhance the theme such as the elements of the story. These elements include but are not limited to the setting, the point of view, and symbolism. “The Welcome Table” by Alice Walker (1970) communicates to her readers how religious faith prevailed against the racists views of others while using certain elements to contribute to her theme.…

The symbols in Zadie Smith’s novel, White Teeth, connect to one another throughout the novel and contribute to the novel’s multiculturalism and absurdism. Zadie Smith offers a look into the psychology and inner workings of society by portraying the cultural mixing of three families in modern-day London. Literary absurdism focuses on the motives and purpose of characters based on their previous experiences; and multiculturalism focuses on the diversity of communities and the interactions in those communities. The concerns of legacy, identity, and tradition in the different characters strengthen the multiculturalism and absurdism of the novel.…

In conclusion, all of these literary works, share a central theme. In the case with these works, that theme is dark, and depressing, since it discusses a futility few wish to see in their reading material. Oedipus, “We Grow Accustomed to the dark,” and “The Ass and the Grasshopper” all share a common theme of how fools are wise only when it’s too late. You only see the darkness when it has fully engulfed you.…
