Whiteface Clown Research Paper

Joe, a seven year old boy, was very excited to go see his first clown with his family. He experienced his first clown when he went to the circus. He went to the Ringling Bros Circus and met a Whiteface clown. Joe later found out that the Whiteface clown was not the only type. In addition to the Whiteface clown, Joe soon discovered that there are more kinds of clowns: the “Auguste” clown as well as “character” clowns, which are all very different in appearance and character (All About Clowns, “Types”).
The Whiteface clown, also known as the “circus clown,” is the most common clown. Its face is painted all white with black around its eyebrows and mouth and has a big red nose. As well as its makeup, its costume consists of a jumpsuit ” (All About Clowns, “The Whiteface”). Furthermore, the Whiteface clown is a comic performer, enjoying “slapstick and other types of physical humor” (All About Clowns, “The Whiteface”). Also, the Whiteface clown originated in the 17th century as a “simple-minded character in the French theater” (All About Clowns, “The Whiteface”). Even though the Whiteface clown was one of the first clowns, it is still one of the most popular ” (All About Clowns, “The Whiteface”).
The Auguste clown, as it is commonly referred to, found its origins in the mid 1800’s. It varies in appearance from other clowns because it lacks full face makeup. Instead, the august clown wears only thick white lines painted around both eyes and the mouth and has little red, pink, and tan color. The Auguste clown tends to dress in exaggerative clothing with it being either too small or too big. A wardrobe that is bold in color is typically accompanied by suspenders. The Auguste clown is often considered the funniest of them all, performing usually from a distance for larger audiences (All About Clowns, “The Auguste”).
