I think this quote means that she is really happy that her father is all finished with what he was doing, so now she can go back to her home. Although, she did have fun in the last month of their stay because of all the slumber parties that were thrown in her honor, yet she is still happy to be going home. Even though in the book she did say "This avalanche of kindness did not make it any easier." Also, everyone wanted to know when she was coming back. But they did not have an answer, but they did
say that they could come and visit anytime that they wanted to.
I think that anybody who would read the story, then would see this quote, would think the same thing that I am thinking about it. This was a very good story and the quote "After almost two years in Whittier, my father assignment was completed and we had to return home. The last month of our stay I attended one slumber party after another, all thrown in my honor." , explains a lot more than what I just explained. It tells a really good part of the story and the family in it.
