Orphaned as a young child, Abigail had no presence of love and nurture in her early years. Her traumatic experiences throughout her life have influenced her to become a treacherous young girl. Throughout the play her lies and accusations have caused multiple people pain, and they have suffered due to the lack of her maturity. Unfortunately, there was only one person who Abigail really cared for, and that was John Proctor. Firstly, she had an affair with him for several months, even though he was a married man. Eventually, John ended the affair, but Abigail
was not ready to accept it. Continuously, she made efforts to rekindle their romance. When things do not go in her direction, she attempts to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor in any way possible. First of all, she tries to place a spell on her, and later accuses her of witchcraft. The reason behind all this, is to get Elizabeth out of the picture so she could take her place. Abigail is a confident, aggressive and manipulative young girl. All of these qualities help her defend her reputation, and constantly help her get out of trouble. No matter what the situation was Abigail made sure that “[her] name [was] good in the village!”, and was determined to “not have [her] name soiled!” When Reverend Hale questions her about dancing in the forest she immediately jumps at the opportunity to defend herself by mentioning “I didn’t see no devil”, and by pointing fingers at Tituba, placing herself out of the spotlight. This unacceptable behavior soon began to get out of hands, and helped her successfully accuse the other naive citizens of Salem for witchcraft.
Overall, her affection for John, traumatic childhood, and her fears for her life helped us understand that all the tragedies occur because of her. Due to her horrendous personality, she wanted everything to go her direction without caring about who she hurt, and unfortunately she got what she wanted.
