Who Is Abigail Williams Play In The Crucible

The Salem Witch Trails of 1692 was an event that shaped history, as well as the lives of those whose wives and husbands were condemned to death. In the Crucible by Arthur Miller the setting is in a Puritan society where priests and church figures have all the power. The Crucible expressed many things but mostly spoke on emotional intensity. Abigail is a mean and naïve person who wants her way no matter who she hurts. Her accusation and lies cause many people pain and suffering but she seems to never care for anyone but, her love of her life, John Proctor. Since Abigail Williams is motivated by revenge and rebellious her decision to kill Elizabeth, ruin the Proctor’s family, and protect herself creates mayhem by the end of the play. Abigail has many roles and characteristics in this play but in Act I; she played as a cousin who is very disobedient not only, but also a mistress that is naïve. During Act I Abigail lies rather than telling the truth. The first lies come within the first few lines. Particularly when she lies about what they had done in the forest and tries to cover it up by adding lies on top of
She doesn’t change herself but instead she attempts to change everyone else around her to keep herself out of trouble. When Abigail did get caught dancing in the woods she began to tell lies to try and shift the focus away from her to the focus on the other girls and witchcraft. But at the very end of the play she became a thief and fled the town. Parris says, “ Excellency, I think they be aboard a ship. My daughter tells me how she heard them speaking of ships last week, and tonight I discover my-my strongbox is broke into” (Miller, 879). Harthone say, “She have robbed you” (Miller, 879)? Parris responds to Harthone and say, “Thirty-one pound is gone. I am penniless” (Miller, 879). This action that Abigail has done revels her true character and that she is thinking of her own
