would arguably become not only the most conservative Supreme Court Judge but also the most
controversial. James Staab remarked in his book The Political Thought of Justice Antonin Scalia
A Hamiltonian on the Supreme Court that Justice Scalia was actually the less debatable candidate
of the two that President Regan was considering (24). Staab goes on to say that the Senate
confirmation hearings were rather dull with then Senator Joseph R Biden trying to goad Scalia
into revealing more personal information to make the hearings a little less leaden (24).

though he was extremely successful at the firm he left after six years to follow in his father’s
footsteps and became a professor at the University of Virginia. Scalia went on to be general
counsel at the Office of Telecommunications Policy and then several other positions within
President Nixon’s cabinet (Staab 8). He went on to become the assistant attorney general during
President Ford’s tenure. When President Ford left office Scalia returned to teaching but this time
at the University of Chicago. President Reagan nominated him for the Court of Appeals for the
District of Columbia in 1982. He only served four years at the district court before being
nominated for the Supreme Court.
Justice Scalia had a very typical road to the supreme court. Including Scalia six of the
justices went to Harvard and all attended an ivy league school. There are also four former
professors on the bench once again including Scalia. Finally, another avenue that several justices
have taken is to be a judge on the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Perhaps the
only avenue not taken by Scalia was to clerk for the Supreme
