Who Is Mark Watneys Character
Lit Circle 2

In the novel The Martian by Andy Weir, Mark Watney shows us how a simple and static character can prove to be an interesting protagonist. His excellent problem solving ability, witty humour and persistent attitude make him a very likeable and relatable character to many. Mark’s unique traits combined with his can do outlook make his survival chances on Mars exponentially higher. In class we discussed the idea of character development in The Martian; however, our group focussed more on the lack of character development in The Martian. Although, as the novel progresses Watney does begin to realize how isolated he truly is from the people on Earth. Mark begins to show how the isolation is truly getting to him when he says “I’d

Although Mark Watneys character in The Martian is not plausible due to unrealistic circumstances his traits and the decisions he makes are highly plausible. Mark has a background in mechanical engineering and in botany. This tells us that his ability to fix problems in the HAB (Marks home on Mars) that may cause others death is extremely probable, as well as his ability to maintain a sustainable potato farm to increase chance of survival. Even though some of the coincidences seem to be a little bit unlikely Watneys character is mostly plausible. Another reason Mark is extremely likeable is due to his relatable character traits. Marks sense of humour, intuitiveness, and fear of isolation are all very common traits among people. I cannot relate to his situation but, I can relate to Marks fear of isolation and I believe many people can. Marks plausibility, relatability and fascinating traits make him a great protagonist.
Overall Mark Watneys traits, development and plausibility make The Martian a very enjoyable read. Watneys likeable personality and quick thinking make him an extremely character to read about and allow the reader to enjoy his unexpected surprises on

For example Westly had the most character development, which isn’t saying much considering all we are told is his name and where he disappeared too, which was to join a faction of pirates. But other characters like Buttercup and Prince Humperdinck have no backstory and, although their personalities and traits are gradually revealed as the story progresses, there were very few opportunities to become emotionally attached to these three main characters.…

In the Martian chronicles the question "how does man adapt to change?" is answered multiple times, but with all the same answer. The author, Brabury, takes real life situations that he was dealing with and made them into out of the ordinary times and settings, but with the same concept. Now he switched the answer to "how does man adapt to change?" to write his book. The answer to the question is of course, man adapts to change by making the unfamiliar familiar. Each character has a different train of thought to the changes of Mars and their findings, but they all have the same reaction of changing the unfamiliar to the familiar. The messages are also great and adaptable to the human eyes but instead of putting the messages into familiar settings, Bradbury puts these messages into unfamiliar settings, which is like the exact opposite of how humans adapt to change.…

My short attention span of that time was drawn to Ray Bradbury’s story since at that time I loved space exploration, and the idea of colonizing Mars intrigued me, so I decided to read it over winter break. I remember sitting by the crackling fire with the sound of my cousins playing board games in the background. Despite this, I tuned these sounds out and read about the adventures of Captain Nathaniel York and his mysterious disappearance from Mars. This book’s style of having mini stories within a larger picture encouraged me to then keep reading this story until the end. When the story was over, I became distraught over the fact that this beautiful story was over. This sadness resulted in my relationship with reading to shatter, and I did not read a book for an extremely long time. Many years later in eighth grade, I remembered the joy that I had reading one of Ray Bradbury’s stories, so I wanted to read more. One day when thinking about what to read for my first book report, I decided to check my collection of books that my family had collected over the years. I walked into my basement that day in pitch black, and turning on the blinding light, I saw one of Bradbury’s stories, Fahrenheit 451. The plot contained within these dusty pages regained my passion for reading almost instantaneously, and then…

Acting is one of the many aspects that made the Martian such a hit, because of Matt Damon’s “Mark Watney” ability to get into character and sell the position of being stranded on Mars after his team thought he was killed in a storm. It left him later to realize he had survived and was fighting for survival. Like many other movies like this one, the actor went to great lengths to show his despair in survival and trying to maintain a good attitude as well as times of panic through it all. Different concepts from the chapter, which we discussed in class, can be compared to the different aspects that Mark Watney and the casting crew went through to make the Martian a hit it is today.…

Have you ever wanted to escape your monotonous life to a crazy reality? If so, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is the book for you. In this book, Arthur Dent is a perfectly normal Englishman until his friend Ford Prefect (who is actually an alien) saves him from the destruction of the Earth. They get kicked off the ship they escaped on and then happen to get rescued by Zaphod Beeblebrox, President of the Galaxy and Ford’s half cousin, on his stolen ship running on improbability. They then land on the planet-making planet of Magrathea. Arthur then learns about how the Earth was a supercomputer calculating what the question of life, the universe, and everything was and that it was run by mice. Finally, they narrowly escape after galactic police attempt to capture them. Following my examination of Douglas Adam’s book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, I have concluded that the theme is that the world can be absurd at times.…

Mark Watney is alive and well! Now that we have communication with Mark we have decided to interview him. So Mark how're you doing today? “I'm just dandy thanks for asking, but it's a shithole up here and i want to leave”. Now throughout the whole interview Mark seemed quite agitated and used foul language even though our producer / reported Annie Montrose told him that this was being broadcasted and showed to everyone in the world. He then flicked off the camera to show he didn't care. From the end of our interview with Mark although it was short and sweet he basically just wants to come home. Also, he doesn't blame his crew for leaving him because they didn't know and he doesn't want them to beat up on themselves over something like that.…

Is the Martian’s story concept believable or not? Could I survive like Matt Damon did? The story concept in the movie the Martian is believable in my opinion because there could be so many things or planets that we aren’t seeing because it hasn’t been discovered yet. Another reason I think the Martian’s story concept is believable simply because it showed that they were going inside of Mars, which is known as the Red planet, however in the process one was left behind. Typically, from what I know most astronauts tend to go to the Moon not Mars.…

Another character to note is Sean Parker. Sean Parker is a foil to the protagonist, Mark. Mark pairs up with Sean after he launches ‘thefacebook’. Sean has a history of manipulating his way through major companies with the agenda of getting rich only, quite the opposite of Mark.
