Who Is Serena Williams?
Serena Williams is a name that almost everyone recognises. No wonder! She is the fiery, talented and competitive girl that transformed herself into one of the best, if not the best, women’s tennis player ever. Her level of competitiveness is extraordinary and the determination we all see on her face as she ace’s her next opponent is scary. We don’t only love Serena because of her tennis skill; she is down to earth as well. She is someone who makes people watching tennis stay on the edge of their seat.

Serena Williams’ first contact with tennis was at an unbelievable age of 3. Her first tennis tournament was at the tender age of 4 and a half. Early on in her tennis career, her father, Richard coached her and her older sister, Venus. Serena

Rick Macci began coaching Serena when she was just 9 years old. Macci stated that Serena was “either going to be number 1 in the world, or she will go to jail.” An anecdote from this early time is quite telling. When talking about how Serena played with other children Macci said "I could remember playing tag with all the other kids in the sand pit. Just to work on agility, dexterity, you know. When she (Serena) played tag, she played with a closed fist”. This attitude showed that Serena had a natural competitiveness and was willing to do anything to win. Arguably, this is the main reason she has been so successful. As a child she did not just participate in tennis, but also enjoyed boxing, Taekwondo, and gymnastics. To maintain her form as an adult Serena puts in about 5 hours of exercise a day. This includes 3 hours of tennis followed by 2 hours of cardio and strength training. In addition to this, Serena does Bikram yoga and Pilates two or three times a week. While Serena is a serious professional sportswoman she also has a humourous side to her personality, which many can relate to. She was quoted saying “I can never turn down a good piece of cherry pie, but all I know is that in 10 years, I don’t want to be as wide as the couch.” This shows there is good reason for working out five hours a day, another than being able to obliterate your opponents, so you can enjoy some cherry …show more content…
It is evident that she is someone who has changed the tennis world for the better. She has had win after win, title after title, adding up to 22 Grand Slam Titles. Serena has had to fight her way through losses and injuries as well. Her determination to get the job done throughout her whole tennis career is incredible. This is shown in the five hours she invests every day in training. Her ambition is to supersede Steffi Graf in the number of Grand Slam titles won. Tennis has and still is a massive part of her life. It is everyone’s dream to be able to do their hobby as a job, and Serena is one of the lucky few to be able to do this. In the near future, it would not be surprizing for Serena to smash her way through another tournament, making herself the best women’s tennis player in

“Tennis is lonely. There is nowhere to hide when things go wrong. No dugout, no sideline, no neutral corner. It’s just you out there naked” (57). This quote may mean nothing to people who don’t play tennis, but for tennis players, it defines the way it feels on the tennis court. “It's no accident, I think, that tennis uses the language of life. Advantage, service, fault, break, love, the basic elements of tennis are those of everyday existence, because every match is a life in miniature. Even the structure of tennis, the way the pieces fit inside one another like Russian nesting dolls, mimics the structure of our days. Points become games become sets become tournaments, and it's all so tightly connected that any point can become the turning point. It reminds me of the way seconds become minutes become hours, and any hour can be our finest. Or darkest. It's our choice.” This is one of Andre’s most meaningful quotes from the book. Almost everyone who reads the quote, can learn a lot about life. Andre may be writing about tennis, but there are so countless universal themes that apply to…

Constant Tiafoe, his father, worked in labor before he immigrated to the United States to escape from the brutal Civil War. After meeting Alphina Kamara, they gave birth to Tiafoe and started exposing him to tennis and by age 6, he began saying, “‘I want to be great in this sport,’ ” his father remembers. ‘I want to be the best to ever come from this place.’ ” as stated from “The Son of Immigrants from Sierra Leone, Francis Tiafoe is Top Seed at French Open Junior Tournament” by The Washington Post. Tiafoe’s parents, from the very start, began feeding him the knowledge of the sport to start the initial process of getting him to become a world renowned tennis player. Parents only want the absolute best for their children; coming from a penniless country, it makes sense to groom your child for a successful future. As he aged, his dream drew closer and his passion grew stronger to the point where Tiafoe was serving matches against the best tennis players of all time, such as Roger Federer. During an intense match up, Constant was questioned: “‘Did you ever think you would see Frances on a stage like this, playing the best of all time?’ He couldn’t answer. It was pretty powerful.” Tiafoe’s father couldn’t believe or take in the actuality of his son’s dream being close to becoming a reality. Although the title for “World…

The early Church was birthed through perseverance against intense persecution: (i) physical persecution by the governments of the time which lauded the oppression, imprisonment, torture and death of Christians for their new religious doctrines; and (ii) intellectual persecution by opposing religious sects who sort to denounce the doctrines of Christianity. The Prescription Against Heretics was written in response to the latter – to defend the tenets of Christianity against the false teachings of heretics and religious-based philosophers. Heretics promoted controversial views which were in opposition to those offered by Christian doctrine, with the intention of creating followers of their beliefs. Religio-philosophers were quasi-Christians who promoted the use of intellect and logic to understand Christianity and in doing so, never becoming Christians. Tertullian saw the end of philosophy as heresy and categorizes both as the same. Tertullian defends Christianity by describing heresies as powerless, fallible and only expressive of a lack of faith; he therefore provides a rule of faith as a measure and the authority for Christianity.…
