In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the first reason why Macbeth is responsible for his own downfall is that it was ultimately his choice. Hazlitt states, ‘Macbeth himself appears driven along by the violence of his fate like a vessel drifting before a storm.” Although Lady Macbeth pushed him to kill Duncan, Macbeth is the one that actually took the knife and stabbed him. After Duncan’s death Macbeth was going crazy will guilt. This lead him to kill the guards and Banquo. Macbeth says in Act 3, Scene 1, Line 70, “To make them kings, the seeds of Banquo kings!” He was so guilty about what he did that he snapped and tries to cover his tracks.
