In my opinion the people who surrounded Romeo and Juliet were mainly responsible for their deaths and the consequences. However it can be considered as destiny that Romeo and Juliet are surrounded by such people who in the end are responsible for their deaths. For example it is not by chance that Juliet had such a Nurse and Romeo had such friends which encouraged those coincidences and took part in major events such as Mercutio’s death.
Nurse- she is one of the closest people to Juliet and is always found by Juliet’s side. She plays a significant part in Juliet’s death.I t can be considered as destiny that the Nurse was such a woman since if she was more wise then she would have forseen the harsh consequences of Romeo’s and Juliet’s acquaintance The Nurse can be blamed for Juliet’s death because she did not give proper advice to young and foolish Juliet. She did not notice that it was far too hasty for Romeo and Juliet to marry the next …show more content…
day after they have met. Juliet herself, noticed how everything was too rushed when she told Romeo: “it is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden, too like the lightning, which does cease to be ere one can say “it lightens” – She feels that everything is happening too quickly and that she needs wise advise about her future actions. However, she does not get the right advice from her nurse who agrees to let her marry without explaining the youthful hastiness of this decision. Then again, when Lady Capulet tells Juliet to marry county Paris, the nurse says: I think it best you married with the county, o, he’s a lovely gentleman” Not only the nurse forgets how much Juliet loves Romeo, but she also forgets that she once approved of Romeo as Juliet says soon after the nurse leaves: “Is it more sin to wish me thus forsworn, or to dispraise my lord with that same tongue which she hath praised with above compare so may thousand times?” From this quote we understand that Juliet was not convinced by the nurse and hence she had to take extreme risks in order to be with Romeo. We can blame the nurse for being fooled so quickly by Juliet and not convincing her to make the correct choice.
The Friar – he is a very influential character in the play and as we can observe his advice are almost always followed and his counsel each time interpreted. Hence the young couple were reliant on F. Laurence and his actions always have an impact on the you characters. It might be due to fate that the Friar made the decisions which he had and once again fate is involved. If the friar was different there would be certainly dissimilar consequences. In a way the friar is like the nurse but he most frequently advices Romeo and in the end he constructs a solution for Juliet too.
The F. Laurence’s first fault was that he agreed to marry Romeo and Juliet even thought he knew this was not the most reasonable solution to their love at first sight.. The only reason he agreed to marry them was : “For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households’ rancour to pure love.” This can hardly be an excuse to marry the young and unaware couple who can not make correct decisions without a good counsel. Hence, the Friar is to blame for the marriage aswell as the nurse. However the marriage itself does not cause the deaths of the adolescent couple, it was their juvenile love.
Later the friar’s letter does not reach Romeo and this leads to Romeo taking his own life. However when Juliet wakes up, he is not able to convince Juliet to come with him and join the nuns and lets Juliet commit suicide, yet the nurse was not able to convince Juliet from marrying Paris. So I think it was Juliet’s stubborn “love” or “independent” aspect of her character which in the end killed her. The nurse and the friar only tried to help the young couple and were trying to find the best possible solutions.
Parents- Romeo and Juliet are always influenced by their parents because they were not old enough to be fully independent from their orders. Hence the will of the parents decided the fate of their children and it was considered disobedient to disagree with oneТs parents. However, due to the parent’s characters and perhaps due to the era they were living in, the parents were not usually close to their children and hence they would not provide reasonable advice. Instead the Nurse was like a mother to Juliet and the Friar was similar to a father to Romeo. This distance between the parents and children caused many obstacles, for example Juliet could not confess to being married to Romeo in order to avoid having to marry County Paris.
When Juliet is ordered to marry County Paris she is opposed to this and refuses to obey her parent’s wish the father abuses her with insults such as: “you green-sickness carrion! Out, you baggage! We have a curse in having her.” This is quiet ironic because the father himself implies that this is destined to happen and that it is fate that made her decline the proposal of marriage. The mother does not try and help her daughter and acts coldly towards her and even says: “Talk not to me, for I’ll not speak a word. Do as thou wilt, for I have done with thee.” So Juliet had no other options apart from accepting the poison which friar Laurence suggested. We can only excuse the mother because women, in those times, could not chose their husbands and di not have an equal say as men, so the mother could not influence the father’s decision to wed Juliet. However, she was very cruel with Juliet and did not act like a mother at all.
Rome and Juliet.- the character’s of Romeo and Juliet play an account on their death because it was their own decisions to commit suicide in order to be together, and this decisions were inspired by their characters and provoked by other occurrences and personnel.
At the beginning of the play we see Romeo mourning over Rosaline and admitting that he loves her and that there is no woman which can be compared with her. However, when he meets Juliet this quickly changes and he turns from Rosaline to Juliet as quickly as a lightning flash. This is supported by his little confession: “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight.. For I never saw true beauty till this night.” He admits that he falls in love with Juliet’s beauty and can this be called true love for which you are prepared to die for? It also shows how he immediately becomes lovestruck with Juliet at first sight.
Romeo is very outgoing and cannot control his emotions.
This is seen very often, but it is specially shown when he discovers that Tybalt killed Mercutio , because he cannot prevent himself from becoming infuriated and losing control over his passion for revenge. Also when he finds out that he is banished he cannot take charge of his emotions and think of a solution. I think this is mainly due to his youthfulness and immaturity.
At the end of the play Romeo makes an impulsive decision to end his life. He is so blind by juvenile love and youth that he does not see what he should really do. This is probably the real reason for his death. As J.B. Henneman said: “character is destiny. Romeo is precipitate: he goes to the ball uninvited: he jumps over the garden wall to speak with a girls he just met ; he marries Juliet off-hand, he comes between Mercutio and Tybalt , he slays Tybalt and later slays himself at the tomb of his lover. The tragedy comes from the qualities of RomeoТs
character.”
Juliet does not show a submissive character since while she is following the advice of others, she is rebelling against her parents, and she follows their advice mostly because she does not get a chance to make her own decisions. The play says that she is not yet 14, which means that she must be 13. As Germaine Greer says:” One of the most important aspects of Juliet’s character is her youth – When she metts Romeo she responds so fully, so utterly, she decides, like a child might, that this is it, that there will be no other love for her.” I hold the same opinion as Germaine Greer expresses in his quotation.
Juliet is a strong character but in the wrong time. She agrees to risk her life to be with Romeo yet she cannot argue her decision about marriage or confess to her parents. I very much agree that the main cause of this tragedy is, as Bert Cardullo said: “the hastiness of youth. I would say it is in part about the hastiness of everyone, of the old aswell as the young.”
