Throughout the movie John Keating made the students more free thinking. He pushed them into following their dreams. Near the end of the movie after the play Mr. Perry challenged Neil by saying “Tell me what you feel?” at this point Neil had two options; he could either go the easy route and give up his acting dream to follow the path his father set out for him, or he could defy his father (which would be no easy task) to tell his father what he really felt. It is clear his father still held a place in his heart, even if it was through fear. Neil chose to abandon his dream. This is the point where he emotionally died. In the end, I do not think any one of these three people are one-hundred percent reliable. The death was due to many little problems that built up into a monstrous problem Neil could not overcome. However, I think the leading cause of Neil’s death was the unstable relationship between Neil and Mr. Perry. Their relationship was based on fear and not respect. If Mr. Perry respected Neil, Neil may not have taken his own life, opposite to that maybe if Neil stood up to his father and told him what he truly felt, his father might have understood or compromised.
