Who's On First? By Abbott And Costello
Within comical sketches, dialogue plays a major role in making things funny. In the sketch “Who’s on First?” by Abbott and Costello, they use dialogue the whole entire time yet they use it to a humorous effect. They go back and forth talking about the players' names. “Who’s on first?” “Who is.” “No what’s the name of the guy on first?” “What’s second not first.” This is mostly used comic situations and situational irony. Their use of dialogue makes it funny because they are confusing each other. The irony of this situation is that the names of the players are questions and words you do not usually use as names. This creates the humorous tone that you receive from the wordplay.

Chris Lilley obviously wants characters within the scene to be perceived as humorous and from last night I can now appreciate that not everyone will have the same response to a text. We all react in our own unique way bringing our various life experiences to the piece. A composer’s intent for a text often differs from the audience’s response.…

Some of the types of humour used includes vulgar humour e.g. “DOUG: poofter”, one-liners e.g. “JUSTIN: Where would the world be without social workers? DOUG: In tip top condition”, and running jokes e.g. “CHERRY: go burn a cat”. Using humour really helps the audience connect with the characters and draws them into the world of the play showing that mentally ill people are certainly not that different from the supposedly ‘normal’…

The poem that I'll be analyzing in this commentary is called 'Dad' by Elaine Feinstein. This poem is an emotional and lyrical poem in which the author is reflecting and recalling upon the memories of her deceased father. The main tones that are portrayed in this poem are sorrow, lovingness and mournfulness, and one way in which this is portrayed is through the methodology in which the poem is read, which is in a slow rhythmic speech and enjambment since it is a free verse poem.…

Transparency and privacy are a delicate balancing act that society must teeter in between. In The Circle by Dave Eggers, privacy is viewed as problematic because it does not allow everyone equal access to information. However, the reality of complete transparency is that it violates inalienable rights of the individual. As Mae becomes increasingly involved with the Circle’s activities, it is revealed that the Circle was completely willing to sacrifice the rights of the individual to save the rights of society. This idea of balancing transparency and privacy are completely relevant to modern society as…

Red wires marks the beginning of The Economist talking to people who might not yet consider themselves to be Economist readers through its marketing and advertising. It was sparked by research undertaken by the magazine last year which discovered that, because of the rise in the number of people going on to university, there are now over 3 million people in the UK whose interest in world affairs, travel, news and politics suggests an unconscious affinity with what The Economist reports on every week. The Economist describes these people as the “intellectually curious”.…
