The ability to learn is something each person is born with, as a nation Americans have proven to be adapting and succeeding in the world around them. Looking back just a hundred years ago, there was a huge change in the way we live and how Americans have adapted to their modern world. However, the debate whether Americans are getting smarter or dumber is easily prove[O5] n by looking at the facts. American[ today are using their brains to think critically, increasing their IQ scores by furthering their education and gaining ground in continuing to make this country great for the next generation.

This phenomenon was explained by the Flynn Effect. It was first discovered by James R. Flynn when he was trying to understand the connection between the US military test and the mainline IQ test. The Flynn Effect describes how over the past century, the average IQ in industrialized countries has risen to keep pace with the complexity of modern life (Lea Winerman). Our brains haven’t advance in any way significantly since 1930, but our ability to figure out a wider range of conceptual problems has. From 1900 to 2012, the average IQ has increased by 30 points. Which means that the average person today has a higher IQ than 95% of the population in 1900s. A study done in 2014, resulted in the conclusion that today’s young adults are better educated than the silent generation. Millennials are between 19-34 years old and the Silent generation are anywhere from 70-87 years old. The improvement in education in America is clear when you look at the 7 % of women from the silent generation who earned at least a bachelor’s degree. And compare it to the 27% of Millennial women who have already gotten there bachelor’s degree. The amount of Millennials women in America today with a Bachelor degree is almost four times higher than the Silent generation. If you look at men from both generations you will see an education gain from 12% to 21%.
