Wildfires even affect things you would even guess. The wildfires of Florida in1998 effected tourism.”In 1998, the counties in the SJRWMD that were affected by the fires lost $138 million in tourism” They even lost value in land.”Forest landowners with burned timber lost approximately $350 million in value”. To pay for all these damages to all in these two states, they had to raise taxes and gas prices which led to being 46 million dollars in taxes. Through all the negative affects of the wildfires on the economy there are some positives and people at the University of Oregon had studied and found the positives in wildfires. “The researchers found that generally, local employment and wages in a county increase during large wildfires.” Another positive effects is the economic activity made with the community coming together. “These may include forestry support work, such as building fire lines and performing other defenses, or providing firefighting teams with food, ice, and amenities such as temporary shelters.” And with the help of other states and funding from the government the can rebuild and be prepared the next time there is a forest fire gone wrong. So, yes Wildfires are truly important to society and the government and environment because it affects it in positive and negative standpoints as well. Wildfires are also truly important to the environment because it benefits its, proving that wildfires can be more helpful than destructful.
A downside to the fires is the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which damages the atmosphere and raises earth’s temperature. There are many positive outcomes of wildfires. “They return nutrients to the soil by burning dead or decaying matter.” With the nutrients of returning to the grounds, seeds of can grow back stronger and better. There are even plants that need wildfires to release their seeds such as the Jack Pine. “Their cones are very thick and hard. They are literally glued shut with a strong resin.” “These cones are referred to as serotinous which means, late blooming or opening. Serotinous cones can hang on a pine tree for years without opening up to release its seeds. When a fire sweeps through a forest of jack pines, the heat from the fire melts the resin, allowing the cones to open up and release the seeds.” The wildfires are actually helpful and not destructive like what the news shows us. One of the most common serotinous cone tree are the giant sequoia trees in California. “Their cones can contain up to 200 seeds and may take just under 2 years to mature. Once matured, they will remain in the cone and await a forest fire. The heat from the fire causes the cones to open and release their seeds.” Through all the good there are some bad. “Frequent wildfires will disrupt the natural cycles of these forests by eradicating native plant species and encouraging growth of fire-resistant plants and other invasive plant species. This shows that wildfires can be both good and bad for the
environment. In conclusion, Wildfires are and should be truly important to people because its effects our economy and affects our ecosystem where it could be destroyed or changed which is not always good. But with the knowledge of how to control wildfires and put up defenses for when it spreads out of control we can better protect ourselves and our environment.
