Although some people may believe that there is not much racism left in our country it is still here. Hispanic, Asian, Blacks and many other people experience racism, some on a daily basis. Lately one of the biggest focuses has been the Black population. The black lives matter movement came about after a series of police killings. It was made to bring light the injustices that were taking place. Yes, there are many laws in place but they don’t always protect you from harm. When you look back in history when it came to blacks they weren’t so quick to make things fair. For example, the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves but it didn’t give them any rights. This is very untrue, Black lives matter means that all lives matters. It’s not saying “our lives are the only lives that matter” but is its saying “our lives matter too”. With that being clarified there are many specific things that face the black community. For example, discrimination and much injustice. Black lives matter uses the P.O.W.E.R principle. The “P” stands for Protesting the civil mistreatment of unjust abuse. The “O” stands for outreach, they meet with the communities that need change. The “W’ stands for withdrawing from businesses who discriminate. The “E” stands for encouraging family or a certain person who needs support. We as a society, particularly given our history, have to take this seriously. And one of the ways of avoiding the politics of this and losing the moment is everybody just stepping back for a second and trying to understand that the African-American community is not just making this up, and it’s not just something being politicized; it’s real and there’s a history behind it.
