To begin on this journey and fully understand why college education is important to me, I must start in my childhood. My mother always enforced the importance of good grades and daily school attendance. As a child I was told about the negative effects that not finishing high school would have on my life. I was raised by a single mother that was a successful beautician. I guess with all the success that she had didn’t give me the impression that I needed a college education. I never imagined that college credits or a degree would keep me from reaching my dreams. Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs only to the people who prepare for it today. (Malcom X, 1964)
I always knew I wanted to be a registered nurse. My goal was to complete high school and immediately attend college. Once I graduated from high school I lost sight of my goals and let many years pass before pursuing my education. I was hypnotized by a descent paying job and honestly thought I was satisfied and did not need any higher learner. After five years on the job I was laid off and left without any job leads. The job that I had was normally held by degreed individuals. I realized that it was time to go …show more content…
to school. I decided that I could get by without going to a traditional college and I would settle for a certificate instead of a degree. I attended a vocational school and obtained my license as a vocational nurse. I have been successful as a vocational nurse but I eventually desired to have a degree.
I encourage my kids to pursue a college education and to never stop until they accomplish their dreams. I no longer want to be that parent that preaches the lesson and not practice it. I feel that by showing my kids what I have accomplished will encourage them to do the same and hopefully even more. I want to be able to help them pursue their education by reading over their papers and offering advice from my previous experience. I believe my kids will value my advice and wisdom when they know that I was once in the same situation. I love the quote for Nelson Mandela- “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” (2003) Rather we want to change our personal world around us or make changes globally, education is the foundation that we must start on. I may never be able to change the world but I can change my family’s education path.
Throughout my career I have seen how people with college educations have an easier time climbing the ladder of success.
Many jobs that have employee growth potential require applicants to have college degrees or credits. A college educations allows you to look at a wider range of jobs and explore different career paths. A brighter future and a better quality of life is in store for me once I obtain a degree. My plans are to obtain my associates degree in Health care Management then I will be able to become the director at my adult activity day center. Once I obtain my associates degree I will consecutively pursue my bachelor’s degree. I have not decided if I want my degree as a registered nurse but I am taking it one degree at a
time.
When I think of where I want to be in my life and career; a college education is the only thing holding me back. A college education is important to me because it will open doors to my future. Now that I have made my ultimate business goal and ran into a road block, Nelson Mandela’s quote rings in my head. In order to obtain my goal of owning my own center I will have to use education to knock down the brick wall in front of me. My college education will give me knowledge and skills to use in business and life.
