The average American pays back their student loans in payments of $229 to $241 a month for 144 months of their lives. That is twelve years in debt. The money used for repayment could be put toward different necessities like insurance, housing, and food.
Most college dropouts conclude their education because of financial reasons. The amount of dropouts could be significantly lowered if tuition prices were to decrease. One of the main reasons tuition is so high today is because of housing and text books. If colleges and universities could get more sponsorships to pay for textbooks and other educational necessities prices could be lowered enough for the lower middle class to receive the average post secondary education.
The biggest complaint by college students that are still attending school, is the requirement on taking classes that are not necessary to the undergraduate’s preferred major. For example, if you are a sophomore majoring in business, why should you have to pay $860 extra for a nutrition class, something that has no significance with your major? Students are obliged to buy their own textbooks for classes that have a duration of only a mere 9 weeks. Textbooks can cost up to $300 for one semester. If students in high school get a 25 or better on their ACT, more colleges could give out scholarships that waive state tuition. Students will be less likely to dropout if more scholarships and money was provided for their education. The reasons why most dropouts believe that college is a waste of time and money is because, if they decide not to go to college they still have the option to go to a workplace that pays on the high end of minimum wage.
