One reason competitive sports are good for kids is that they can get into better shape. In an article by O’Connor, it said that if kids were playing 2 sports a year. The amount of obesity would decrease by 26%.Why is this important? Well it’s obvious that almost a fourth of the kids that …show more content…
are struggling with obesity won’t really have to worry about it if they were playing 2 or more sports a year. Recent studies have shown that only 16% of students walk or bike to school (O’ Connor). These results might be the reason of rising amount of obesity. Kids have to get more daily exercise or obesity will rise like what’s happening in the 21st century. During the fall, I play football, and in the spring and into the summer, I play baseball. Personally, I feel like I’m in great shape (Personal). I’m not always active and I eat a lot of food daily, but those 2 sports I think really keep me from being obese. If more kids would do what I do and play 2 sports, they might get into better shape and they will probably feel great.
A second reason why sports are beneficial for kids is that they can learn important life skills. They can learn coping skills (Mango). This is important because kids will learn how to deal with losing and they will learn that they will learn more when they fail than when they win. An article by Kirk Mango he said that kids learn cooperation. Kids learn how to work together with other kids. This might be important for jobs that the have when they get older. They also learn not be selfish, because if they do, they might fail. A final thing they learn is perseverance (Mango). When kids are working out or playing in a game, kids need to know that they can get better and stronger.
A third reason why competitive sports are important for kids is that they develop a better character.
When I say character I don’t mean that they are making up a fictional character. I mean they can become better as a person. People have said that sports can stop negative behaviour, because they will know the consequence. They also learn integrity. When they are following strict rules, they learn that they need to always be following those rules whenever and wherever. A final reason is that I know if I do something that I know I’m not supposed to do, I know the consequences, things like a school suspension. A game suspension things like that. Those do not sound fun.
Some people think that sports are not right for kid. They think that injuries are the main reason why sports are terrible for kids. They do bring up a very good point but, the CDC says the ½ of the injuries that occur in sports are preventable. So if they get hurt from something, they might have been able to prevent it by fixing up what they did wrong. For an example, think about football. If a player tackles leading with their head, they have the risk of a neck injury. If they do get hurt, they would know that they could’ve saved themselves the pain by correcting their tackling
form.
In conclusion, competitive sports are definitely good for kids because they can get into better shape, learn life lessons, and develop a better character. People think that injuries should prevent kids from playing sports but, the CDC says that ½ of the injuries that occur are preventable. How would you feel if you were never able to see yourself, a family member, or a friend win a game in a sport? How would you feel if all of that joy in winning was gone, forever and you never would never have the chance to win in sports again?
